Charlie is placed into a world where she begins being an actress, then becomes a spy, then is trained by the Palestinians as a guerrilla and finally is sent to deliver a bomb. She is chronically confused by how far she is really supposed to go in her impersonations and how much of herself she must give up. I suppose "Yes" and "No" is the best answer. Where has this film been hiding for 20 odd years? Copyright problems I suppose, and there are many good films lying in vaults somewhere waiting for release, like this one. This comes in a very good print. Sound track is fine (tho beware a variety of accents sometimes makes it hard to follow). The plot is good Le Carre - complicated but you can follow it - but the film is very long (2hrs 10") and the first hour is slow and a bit talky. It livens up for the second half and from then on is a pretty good watch. The casting is odd - For me Diane Keaton doesn't convince as "The little Drummer girl", but she is perfectly watchable. Yorgo Vyagis (who?) also failed to convince me he could persuade Diane to do what she does cos she is in love with him (I think-or is it all politics and not sex - any thoughts out there?). Kinski seems to think that whipping his glasses on and off makes for good character acting. You can see a very young Bill Nighy and I am almost certain Charlotte Cornwall has a W/O for 5 secs (her bro appears briefly as a police chief.). BEWARE - If you don't know the plot - Do not read the blub on the back - It's a spoiler, and it's not the only one (A Dandy in Aspic has the same problem). Worth getting, it's rare now and thankyou Warner Archive, but when will these DVDs become available in U/K High Streets?

Having recently been disappointed by the film version of The Looking Glass War I was curious to see if this would be a better effort at filming one of Le Carre's novels. Unfortunately this is equally disappointing. Keaton is badly miscast in the lead role (as was Christopher George in TLGW) and the whole film has a somewhat underfunded look. Surprising given director George Roy Hill's previous work. Both of these films support the view that Le Carre's novels lend themselves far better to TV where 6 or 7 hours can be given to exploring the story rather than 2 in a film version.

I'd forgotten just how good the performances of Diane Keaton and Klaus Kinski were in this film. I always thought it was a fair cinematic representation of the book but looking at it recently I thought it was better than my original thoughts. The Director and Screenplay adaption still allows some of the complexities of the issues at the time to show through without overstating things. One thing it isn't, is a polemic and that's always
preferable.

I was glad to finally get this one on DVD. Although about 40 years old the item of this movie seems to be kind of up to date nowadays. Klaus Kinsky in one of his rare rolls where he did not play a (entirely?) bad guy.

A clever and well constructed plot but I felt that the part played by Dianne Keaton did not fit the part well - perhaps over -acted . That said it was an excellent film that needs a good levelconcentration .

Very very dated, plot is not clear, book is infinitely better. Other Le Carre ecanisations were much better thought out and much better cast as well.
