Product description

Product Description

17th Century romantic adventure stars Linda Darnell as the amorous courtesan who is able to conquer any man ...except the one she wants.

Amber, a village maid, is abandoned pregnant and penniless by Bruce Carlton (Cornel Wilde), a gallant adventurer whom she desperately loves. Amber uses her wits, beauty and courage to sleep her way to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England; that of favourite mistress of the Merry Monarch himself, Charles II (George Sanders), all in the hope that Bruce will return. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from the Great Plague to the Fire of London, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her sexual escapades, her heart remains true to only one man.

With its dazzling reproduction of the Restoration, it's convincing swordplay, court drama and war, Otto Preminger's grand swashbuckler is based on the racy novel by Kathleen Winsor.

A more becoming Amber could hardly be conceived than the firm, luxurious creature that Linda Darnell makes. --New York Times

This was suppoed to have "Spanish Subtitles" but turned out that if you did not speak Spanish it was difficult to get the English language. The seller DeeVeeDee was obnoxious when I queried the fact that I thought that this would be in English with Spanish subtitles. I wanted to return it but was knocked back. It starts off with no-smoking and other ads. in Spanish, then on to Spanish for several minutes, and then there is more Spanish showing you how to get English translation. If you can't read Spanish you have to try and try again. I was told I as not sensible by DeeVeeDee and I think it is disgraceful to send an email to a customer in this vein. I finally worked out how to get it in English but still had to go through the Spanish rigmarole at the beginning. Very disappointing. I was able to get another copy of this from another company in straight forward English. I have had Dutch imports which are quite easy but this Spanish import is not and I would not recommebnd it. I have dealt with Amazon for many years and have not had to write such a review as this, in fact my reviews have been very complimentary in the past.

I saw this on TV as a child and wanted to see it again. Unfortunately the picture and sound quality are a bit worn, scratchy and dark, but then it is nearly 70 years old. A great yarn of a tale about what can happen when you fall in love with the wrong bloke, and then won't let it go. Amber shows tenderness, grit and determination in equal measure but is her own worst enemy, greedy for fortune but longing for love... she's a traditional heroine of the hard-to-like variety. There's so much crammed into this story, it could probably be in two parts... time passes by very rapidly, and Amber doesn't really seem to age, probably because she looks a bit too mature at the beginning. Not quite as romantic as I'd remembered it, but it's a great example of a film of its time.

Set in 1660 England during the Restoration era of Charles II (George Sanders, no surprise stealing the movie), a young country girl (Linda Darnell) feeling repressed by the rural country life as well as by her adoptive Puritan father (Leo G. Carroll) flees to London to make her fortune. Though in love with one man (Cornel Wilde), a profiteer on the seas for the King, she sleeps her way to top of court society until she becomes the King's mistress. Based on the "scandalous" best seller (it was banned in fourteen states and condemned by the Catholic church) by Kathleen Windsor, it's hard to see what all the fuss was about based on resultant and considerably cleaned up Otto Preminger film. What we end up with is a colorful costumer about an ambitious vixen and while the heroine is a "wicked" slut, as played by the appealing Darnell, you can't help but like her. Still, all in all it's too tasteful when it should be a bit more naughty or, yes, even vulgar. I mean when you have a sexy wench manipulating those around her and sleeping her way to the top, it should more fun, no? And Darnell could have used a livelier leading man than Wilde who seems too enervated here. The plague and great fire of London sequences are handled very nicely. The Oscar nominated underscore by David Raksin is a thing of beauty. With Jessica Tandy, Richard Greene, Anne Revere, Glenn Langan, Richard Haydn, Robert Coote, Margaret Wycherly (very good as a murderous nurse), John Russell, Norma Varden and Alan Napier.

The Fox DVD from Spain is a decent colorful transfer with both English and Spanish soundtracks with optional subtitles. The film ends abruptly suggesting the film's original ending has been edited out.

This is the classic story of Amber the country girl who falls in love with Bruce Carlton, a handsome cavalier of King charles, and her ruthless climb to Duchess status in order to secure his love and eluding marraige to her. A gripping historical romance that takes us through the colourful London life of the Royal court as well as the Great Plague and Fire of London. I felt that I had to watch this video after reading the 2 volume book to satisfy my curiosity of the beautiful Amber and handsome Bruce and their exiting story. I was not disappointed. With or without the books this is one for the true historical romantics.

Filmed in the dramatic style of the age of the silver screen with lavish costumes, scenery and ambiences, beautiful actors and mega-dramatic acting, this film is certainly worth watching, but I feel it is nowhere near as in-depth as the novel, and therefore could disappoint devotees of the book.

I had searched high and low for this film and book, as i named my daughter Amber after it. As it was apparently my nans favourite, as she died some years before my daughter was born, i decided to name my daughter Amber..... so therefor had to find out more about this film/ book. Having read and watched the film I am not so sure it was very apt but love the name anyway. And also love the film and the book. Thanks nan. And also a great big thanks to Amazon for helping me find it.

Forever Amber is a passionate and lust filled tale of a young girl who ascends slowly through the ranks of King Charles II's court. However, the one man Amber truly loves can never see beyond her peasant birth and continually breaks her heart through out the epic novel. The book is agonising for the reader as we know who really Amber is, but are forced to face what she will forever be to her society. Compulsive page turner!
