Product Description

Product Description

Deutschland 83 is a groundbreaking new series from the producers of the international Emmy award-winning Generation War. It’s 1983. The Cold War is hot. Russian SS20 Missiles in East Germany are already pointed West. American Pershing II Missiles will soon be placed in West Germany, pointing East. The threat of nuclear conflict looms. Our hero, Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), is 23. Born and raised in East Germany, he is sent undercover, as Moritz Stamm, to West Germany, to work for a top General in the Bundeswehr. Officially, his job is to gather intelligence on the placement of the Pershing II Missiles. A secondary gig develops, infiltrating youth culture through close relationships with the General’s two children. But nothing and no one are as they seem. Deutschland 83 is a coming-of-age story within a suspenseful thriller, set against the real events, culture wars and political realities of Germany in the 1980s.

This is the best TV series since Spiral/Engrenages. It is the first German language series ever to be shown in the US, which says something. I loved the Channel 4 broadcast so much that I had to pre-order the DVD so I could watch it all again. It has a fantastic 80s soundtrack and it recreates the detail and tensions of the cold war brilliantly. It's not scared to be tongue in cheek (when a character gives another his card, hoping for a romantic meet, Blondie's Call Me is playing quietly in the background). It's a great story, very exciting with plenty of twists and turns. Every time the main character gets himself out of trouble he plunges headlong into a new potential disaster. But it's not all about spying and there are family and love stories to be resolved too. It's in German with subtitles so you have to concentrate as it moves quickly, but that's no bad thing. If you remember the 80s you will love it

This series is great. A real thrilling and exciting incite into what life was like between East and West Germany as well as for the spies either side of the wall. A gripping series that also looks at the development of AIDS, which brings in a really good cultural and social impact to heavy focus on political and economical aspects.

Cannot recommend this series enough if you like thrilling TV series - a must watch which will leave you wanting to watch it all over again!

I have only seen the first four episode but so far I have been blown away with this well acted, beautifully written series. I simply cannot fault it, from the casting to the direction it excels. What interests me is that I am not particularly interested in political turmoil, history or Germany and yet I was absolutely glued to the screen. Fundamentally this is about people, carefully observed, intelligently developed and beautifully portrayed.

Great series absolutely gripping from start to finish of each episode. But why is there just a UK dvd release and no UK blu Ray release? On the 15th February. I would have certainly pre ordered the blu Ray, but I'll have to think twice about a lower quality dvd release. The stars are for the quality of the drama not for the quality of the dvd.

Really enjoyable series. The authenticity and style of the storytelling made the series what it was. An interesting take on a well known era in German history. The acting was great, and the chemistry between the characters believable. One of those you can watch again and again. And love that theme tune!

One of the best German production since "Das Boot".
This season One Drama was not very successful in Germany because it was too near the truth. But it went down a treat here in England und in the US.
Once you get used to the english subtitles you will be hooked :)

If you weren't around in the 80's, enjoy this 6-part series for the excellent drama it is, dealing very well with a nerve-racking time in the Cold War. If you were there, you also have the added bonus of recognising the clothes, the cars, the telephones, the really great music - you name it!

Unexpected. Exciting and different and based on a history I could remember "99 Luftballons" and all that. We really were sacred of a nuclear war in Europe in the Reagan era 1980s. Fantastic acting and direction. Can't wait for series 2!
