Review

...A stunningly shot, brilliantly designed, award-winning homage to Alfred Hitchcock via Pedro Almodovar. -- Alan Jones, Frightfest

It’s witty and sexy without ever being explicit... the labyrinthine storytelling makes it all pleasurable. -- Kim Newman, Darkside --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is a well-written, well-acted film in which several characters are involved in a variety of relationships - some of which take a distinct turn for the sinister. The film is reminiscent of many Hollywood 1950's detectives films and compares well with "Live Flesh", the Almodovar Film based on a PD James novel.

There are a small number of nude shots and a very brief, almost laughable, scene about "Sex Addicts Anonymous" (shades of Basic Instinct / Color of Night) which is used mainly to show that some of the characters are troubled in a number of ways. This might not match well with the title of the film, which would seem to promise lots of de-robing! The reason for the title, however, is closely linked to one of the characters.

After watching this you may have a new-found relationship with really strong coffee which adds a comic twist near the end of the film.

Overall I watched this with some friends and everyone thought it was an excellent crime film - which kept peoples attention to the end. So 5-stars !

Not the sex-a-thon movie you might expect from the title and, considering the 2 main protagonists are receiving treatment for sex addiction, this is quite tame, in that sense. What you have here is actually a suspense thriller, that gets you hooked into all it's twists.

The characters of Victoria and Javier meet up at a `Sex Addicts' therapy group. They hit it off, and one night, he offers to take her home. On entering the car park, he can't find his car, so they start to have sex in a battered old dodge car. Later this car comes up in a crime that will link them both.

Victoria Abril is adorable as always, and Javier Bardem is such an accomplished actor, he's a pleasure to watch. If you're familiar with Spanish cinema, there are many faces you will recognise here. This is a real treat for Spanish movie lovers.

This is one of those films that is very hard to rate, but as a thriller it is truly superb. Bringing together Victoria Abril and Javier Bardem, seen briefly in the same frame in High Heels from the beginning of the 90s, Manuel Gomez Pereira gives them dream roles that enable them to raise the film into something quite extraordinary - Abril's vulnerability is as well used as in Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, her being older here in the role of Miranda adding something else. They both play sex addicts who meet at a self-help group, and embark on a torrid affair, but both have lives mired in complications - Javier (his name in the film) is involved in some ultra-sleazy sex tapes that have been leaked onto the market without his knowing, involving a mysterious beauty he meets at an airport. The plot is very complicated, and certain aspects still perplex me after at least three viewings, but these details may be deliberate, a way of blurring the boundary between the real and the imagined that has so much to do with the erotic and its relation to language. Film language as well, for that matter, as the world the film creates is one of dark brown tones on the cusp between bleak and warm; it is never less than stylised, but in a way that is always intriguing. Miranda is truly admired by two men, the passionate Javier and equally by her husband, played brilliantly by Carmelo Gomez. The latter is a policeman investigating a murder case in which Javier is the prime suspect. It becomes a tragic triangle, treated with marked Hitchcockian overtones, more than the Almodovar influence, I would say, even if the opening credits lead you to think it is by Almodovar.Read more ›

This film sells itself as an erotic thriller; however although the main characters are all attending counselling for sex additiction, it is only during the first 30-45 mins that this is shown after this the film settles into the crime thriller aspect which is good but jumps about a bit and so can be a bit confusing.

See this if you liked Basic Instinct or Sliver etc.
