Product Description

Andrew Marr’s Box of Britain includes the following titles:

• History of Modern Britain
• The Making of Modern Britain
• Britain from Above
• Darwin's Dangerous Idea

For the first time, all four fantastic series from the celebrated British journalist and political commentator, Andrew Marr, come together on DVD. The wonderfully insightful Andrew Marr's Box of Britain contains the award-winning BBC modern history series written and presented by Andrew Marr, History of Modern Britain and The Making of Modern Britain.

It also features his epic journey to tell the story of Britain as we rarely see her – from above. Combining stunning aerial photography with fascinating social and cultural analysis, Britain from Above investigates how modern Britain works and is monitored from the skies. And finally, Andrew Marr’s fascinating documentary series, Darwin's Dangerous Idea, tells of the impact of this revolutionary idea and how it came to challenge so many aspects of society.

Contains some black and white footage. Due to the archive nature of footage, sound and picture quality may vary. For contractual reasons certain edits have been made.

It's a set of engaging trips round and over Britain. If you didn't see 1) Britain From Above, it's a fascinating view from the sky. Remember those holiday trips abroad where you peered out of the plane window and were rewarded with a patchwork of fields or twinkling lights welcoming you home? Wallow in a whole programme that sees our country from above. Andrew Marr's commentary is excellent, though the music can sometimes be wearing. Nevertheless, one of the best documentaries of recent years.2)Darwin's Dangerous Idea, this is Darwin's ideas plus a wander into the realms of eugenics, ecology and habitat destruction.3)History of Modern Britain covers the period since the Second World War in Andrew Marr's engaging style presenting some facts behind the stories that were on the news and 4)The Making of Modern Britain goes further back, putting over some of the emotional rollercoaster and technological changes that people lived through, from Queen Victoria up to D-Day. It enabled me to better picture my grandmother in the crowd watching Queen Victoria's funeral and my grandfather watching the developments at Cable Street, both of which I knew they had been to, but had had trouble imagining.
An excellent boxed set.

I've watched 2 of the 4 DVD sets so far, and have been richly rewarded for my purchase, so I feel confident in the five stars. History of Modern Britain and The Making of Modern Britain were superbly done. Mr. Marr's approach is intelligent without being dense - hard to do. I loved the way he would be in contemporary settings and "insert" himself into archival footage, not through cheesy CGI, but through his actions and demeanour. This American learned so much through these DVD's. Thank you Mr. Marr!

A considerable bargain and a real find I must say. Having worked through all of the David D series, this was a fun ride through history. The View from Above was outstanding

This is extremely interesting series on modern history of Britain. It really hits on the big events of past century or so of British political/ historical events.
Andrew Marr is quite an interesting guy..and although his loud tone at times can be a bit irritating..he is very good at what he seems to do..keep the audience interested in the subject matter.

For the rather inexpensive price of this DVD set..you are getting 11 hours of modern history of Britain (6 hours of British political history from 1900-1945 & 5 hours of post WW2 British history...so totaling 11 hours of SUBSTANCE material of modern British history.....not "fluffy" at all.)

Also, there are 3 hours more of "Britain from Above"..which is in itself extremely interesting to view and its content on how Britain operates and some more of its history. and then 3 more hours of "Darwins Dangerous Idea". (I am not too big a fan of this particular subject matter..so i will not say much on this DVD..as i didnt bother to watch mutch of it)

This box set comprises of 4 DVDs and they are all like reading a quality magazine.
Britain from Above: Tells the story of Britain's changing physical landscape over the years but viewed from the air. Very fascinating viewing!

History of Modern Britain: Recalls the events that have shaped British life since the end of the Second World War. Included is an account of the evolution of Britain's place in the world since the war and the collapse of Empire. Very interesting!

The Making of Modern Britain: An entertaining and witty overview of the dramas of the Edwardian age, the 1920's and 1030's, the effects of the two devastating wars, the General Strikes and the days of the music halls. So entertaining!

Darwin's Dangerous Idea: this is like reading a scientific or political/social magazine. He explains how, apart from the the impact of the the idea of evolution by natural selection had on society, how this idea was misappropriated and used to justify slavery and the slaughter of World War One and how Hitler used the idea to validate his idea of an Arian race. Andrew Marr then explains how pervading the influence still is - eg environmental concerns.etc.

Most enjoyable and informative DVDs.

Unbelievable television programming for the price and another gem - this box set provides approx. 18 hours of sheer entertainment & I'm unashamedly a fan of Andrew Marr who is always fully engaged with his subject and conveys that unreservedly to the viewer. I bought this box set for the 'History of Modern Britain' programmes - only part of which I'd caught during their broadcast and didn't believe I'd be too interested in the two additional dvds: 'Darwin's Dangerous Idea' and 'Britain from Above' but I was captivated by both. If you like Andrew Marr and his take on being British you'll love this box set and watch it time & time again as I intend to do.

Andrew Marr's programmes are always well researched, interesting and with good touches of humour. This set is no exception and each one of them is worth buying and watching several times. I hope there will be many other dvds of his programmes made available.
