Edited original review due to a subsequent fix from the NAS manufacturer.

------------

*CAUTION* I purchased a few of these to go into a new Synology NAS and each one is exhibiting an intermittent noise issue which I am currently going through with Seagate support (each drive chirps every 15-20 seconds ... seems to occur mostly when the disks are idle). I have reported this to Synology who have inspected all system logs and reported that there is no interference from the system.

Check the US Amazon website comments for this product ... it seems like I'm not the only one with this problem.

If this gets resolved, I'll certainly be bumping this up to 5 stars as the performance is fantastic. For the time being, 2 stars as I am concerned that this is having a detrimental effect on the longevity of what really are expensive drives.

... I will keep this comment up-to-date and add feedback.

I bought one of these to go into my Synology DS216J NAS as I was looking for a fairly high capacity drive which my partner and I could store all of our music, movies, photos and other stuff onto, and this looked like it fitted the bill perfectly.

There's not really much to say as it was a simple case of popping it into the NAS box, closing it and turning it on and ever since then the drive has performed admirably, quietly and quickly with no drama or issues.

I will be getting another one shortly to go into the other bay of the NAS box.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 1st one developed bad sectors after 7 days but... 13 Sept. 2016
By Leif Bertrand - Published on Amazon.com

I ordered two of these to expand my NAS. I had to install one at a time to allow my Synology to rebuild my volume. Each drive replacement takes about 4 days. Well, the first drive started developing bad sectors after about day 7 on the job and then crashed. I was lucky to have redundancy. Anyway, I swapped it out with the other one and ordered a replacement. I just installed the replacement and hoping they hold strong. I like Seagate and am assuming the failed drive was somehow subject to shock before it got to me. I'm giving only 4 stars bc of the failure. If another one fails, I'll come back and update my review to reflect!

27 Sept Update: So far so good. I just checked the two 10TB Seagate IronWolf drives and both are running smoothly with no bad sectors. They do run about 7 degrees (F) hotter than my 6 other, non He drives but don't know if that's normal or not. About sound-They seem quiet to me, similar to my other 10+ Seagate HDD's!

Dec 24 2016 update: the two drives are running 24x7 and without any problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice drive, seems quiet and efficient 22 Oct. 2016

So far so good. The drives are reasonably quiet, a bit quieter than my WD Red drives, but they do run a couple of degrees warmer than the Reds at idle and under load. Both sets of drives are in the exact same type of QNAP enclosure and the enclosures are sitting right next to each other, so ambient conditions are about the same. I am a fan of Seagate drives and was eager to test out the new Ironwolf drives, as all of my other NAS-specific drives are Western Digital and HGST.

Only negative, which I will not penalize the drive itself for, was the horrible packaging job. These drives were sold by and shipped from Amazon directly, and considering the huge array of electronic equipment Amazon sells, they should know better. Drives were laying in the bottom of a fairly large cardboard box with a couple airbags loosely strewn on top. The things likely got banged around a fair bit during shipping. There were no shockproof endocarps in a box specifically designed for a hard drive (my Western Digitals and every other Seagate I have received had those), and not sure why Seagate/Amazon would think it's OK to transport drives like this. I have read reviews on this issue before with drives being shipped in thinly padded envelopes, and thought nah, that could never happen to me! Very disappointed. Fortunately, I didn't see any signs of damage and the drives are performing as intended, so we'll see and hope there are no future issues.

See attached photos. Also included one of a *correctly* packaged Western Digital drive.

This is my second Seagate hard drive in less than a week that is failing right out of the box. The other one was the 8TB Archive model. I will be ordering WD Reds until further notice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Irresponsible and irrelevant updates to a once reliable brand 20 Feb. 2017
By Quarx - Published on Amazon.com

3 consecutive failures in 3 weeks of (2) 3TB and (1) 4TB drives. I have a 1 TB Seagate purchased maybe 9 years ago that's still spinning. I was looking for an alternative to WD's colored (RGB) home drives just because. IronWolf seemed an idea. The 4TB model quietly stopped showing in my external array about 1 week after Amazon's window of return closed. A volume was listed but not its contents. The 3TB that I bought just before the New Year's started showing folders as "corrupt" within 2 weeks. A couple of formats, one short, one long, brought the drive "back" but it succumbed, again. No clinking, no nothing. Amazon's vendor replaced it with a new one which, strangely, only formatted 2.15 TB (GPT, so don't tell me I did it MBR). Having done that, it, too, went dead within days. Don't know if Seagate is doing something new with these drives or whether I "lucked out" with a particularly bad batch. But this is beyond unacceptable, it is irresponsible to release technology without appropriate QA. Maybe they'll fix the bugs, maybe I bought the only lemons. Since I never use new drives for sole residency of data, I managed to keep my original data unscathed - a bad copy is only a bad copy. But to say I am madder than a 3-legged spider is to understate my level of frustration.

3.0 out of 5 stars They sound like an aquarium fish tank. 10 Dec. 2016
By Michael E. - Published on Amazon.com
Size: 8 TBStyle: IronWolf Verified Purchase
These are noisy drives. I ordered 2 of them for uses in my (4 bay) Synology DS916+ NAS. At 15 feet away from across a quiet room, I can clearly hear them rattling away. They sound like the bubbly noise caused by a fish tank aquarium pump.

You would not want to use these drives in a home theater NAS unless you kept your AV equipment in a closet or other room. The sound from these drives would be annoying in any quiet room. I would have preferred HGST Deskstar NAS drives, but their largest is 6 TB (and their larger Ultrastar Enterprise drives reportedly rattle too, and cost more).

I needed two affordable 8 TB NAS drives at minimum to copy stuff off 4 older 4 TB NAS drives. The noise won't be an issue for me, as these will be located in my computer room, where it's already loud from power supply and cabinet cooling fans.

I just need them to be reliable for a few years of 24x7 use. The media/file server, email server, syslog server, web server, and FTP server I have running in that Synology NAS keep the drives active.

I subtracted 1 star for being noisy, and another star for not being honest about it. It should clearly say on the front of the box if it's going to make a lot of noise, lol. Really, why would they make them loud when obviously drives can be made quiet too? Odd.
