Product Description

Product Description

The distinguished composer and pianist John McCabe has written in almost every genre, and has long been one of Britain's leading musicians. In his choral music he has taken a variety of texts including anonymous sixteenth century Latin, and the poems of Henry Vaughan and Thomas Hardy and fashioned them into powerful settings. He evokes a rich variety of vocal colours and textures, remaining at all times communicative and vital, not least in the beautiful Marian Carols and the contrasting riches of the Mangan Triptych.

Review

The BBC Singers deliver the Three Marian Carols with affecting plainness and clear, unaffected diction. ..Iain Farrington brings life and atmosphere to the organ pieces. 4* --Brian Morton, Choir & Organ Jan/Feb 2013

It is classy relaxation... raptly atmospheric and consummately crafted... It s demanding listening, made easier by the superlative performances of the BBC Singers...[and] David Hill s alert, accomplished conducting. 5*/5* --Terry Blain BBC Music Magazine March 2013

Many of the works on this disc demand, and receive, virtuoso singing from the BBC Singers. David Hill more than has the measure of the music, an Iain Farrington, a familiar name, provides fine organ accompaniments. This excellent collection is, therefore, extremly welcome. --IRR, Mar'13

Beautifully sung by the BBC Singers and carefully shaped by David Hill's attentive direction. --Gramophone, May'13

In his booklet notes to the disc John McCabe discusses the "constant pleasure" he derives from composing choral music, and in particular carols, which he sees as contributing to music for the community. All I can say is that this disc opens a whole new area of McCabe's music, one which will be bringing me constant pleasure in the years to come!
The Three Marian Carols which open the disc are pieces of simple beauty, I dare say that they are not that simple to sing, but they have a quality about them a bit like the Three Carol Anthems of Herbert Howells, which just makes you want to hear more. These are followed by the Mangan Triptych, The major work on the disc, more complex choral writing here, complex melismatic singing and alternating time signatures, but still beautiful music. These are followed by another eight choral settings, some purely choral some accompanied by the organ, among them Amen/Alleluia, where over five minutes of music is weaved around these two words, mesmeric!
This is an outstanding disc, music in the same league as Leighton and Berkley that will bring joy to the listener, and a peerless performance from the BBC Singers, they truly are one of the finest choirs in the country.
