Product Description

Clear, directional audio on the GO! Compact and light weight by design, the VideoMic GO delivers clear, crisp, directional audio with incredible ease of use. Its tight pickup area focuses directly in front of the microphone and reduces other surrounding sounds, ensuring that your subject is isolated from distracting background noise. The integrated Rycote Lyre shock mount isolates your microphone from bumps and vibrations that could otherwise interfere with your sound. Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and will never wear out, sag or snap. The VideoMic GO has no complicated switches or settings and is powered by your camera's external microphone input, requiring no batteries to operate, ensuring you never miss a great shot. The VideoMic GO is designed and made in Australia.

After producing videos for over five years, I felt upgrading my audio equipment was crucial. After using this mic for a couple of years, I couldn't be happier with it. Feel free to check out my video review of the mic. I have added a simple summary below of the pros and cons.

Pros
-Doesn't need batteries or power cable
-Very light
-Brilliant audio quality

Cons
-Can produce hissing sound

I shoot wedding videos and used a battery powered mic. It was always a niggling frustration having to remember to switch it on and off and forgetting on the odd occasion. I always try to set up a backup camera and sound recording but I was always concerned that I'd forget to switch the mic on and lose sound on a crucial shot. This mic uses plug in power from your camera (make sure your camera provides it) so is always on and off at the correct times. Perfect for solving that problem.

So how does it sound? I tried it on a wedding recently and have to say I was quite surprised. It was a lot better than expected. Full clear vocals and no background hiss. It wasn't a difficult test as I was within 3 to 4 yards of the couple most of the time but sensitivity seemed good. The speeches were put out over a PA system but this was also recorded nice and clearly.

I'll definitely be using it permanently.

Cons: This goes for all brand name manufacturers and not just Rode but the price is ridiculously high for a condenser capsule stuck in a bit of plastic tube.

Pros: Lightweight, Good sensitivity, Clear vocals, No hiss.

Recommended.

I've just seen some of the other reviews which mention that hiss is produced. This is most likely from poor pre amps in the camera. For info mine is plugged into a JVC pro video camera so is likely to have a good pre amp and I have no problems with hiss. It may be worth you borrowing a plug in power mic to test your pre amp for hiss prior to purchase.

The Videomic go greatly improves the sound on my Sony mini DV video camera. The fact that it is not stereo is not an issue. However in even the lightest breeze there is a deep rumble on the sound track, especially during a quiet scene where the camera's auto recording level may be at its most sensitive. Rode make a deadcat for this mic (called the Deadcat GO), but I can't find it in UK yet (April 2014). This is a must have when available. Also I was worried that the rear of the mic would get in the way when using the viewfinder. What is not mentioned in any of the product documentations is the camera securing clamp can be positioned at three positions along the mounting bar, front, centre and back. This made the mounting ideal for my camera. A worthwhile purchase.

So simple and easy to use. Connect into your camera with the 3.5mm jack and mount on the hotshot. Job done. The sound this mic picks up makes the in built SLR mic completely redundant and I now wouldn't have it without. I make YT videos and do not need lapel mics because of this. Well worth the investment.

Purchased following recommendation from a YouTube review. Beware! order a new one as the 1st Rode Mic I received was damaged and I had to return it.
Packaging is robust, no assembly required other than plugging in the coiled lead, light weight, hotshoe mount also has a tripod screw mount underneath but requires a step up adapter. Sound quality: with a dead cat is clear and directional, which helps to avoid unwanted background noise and wind reduction is excellent as long as wind is not blowing directly into the front of the mic.

Flimsy Construction feels like a toy rather than a prosumer product. Requires phantom power, not a huge issue as I bought it for my Canon DSLR however it didn't work plugged into my laptop mic socket. I also use it with a zoom H2n which suppliers phantom power and connected to the Zoom it's excellent.

I have read reveiws stating that it is no better than some built in microphones which I can relate to but when working further away from the camera it surpasses my built in microphone by a mile. Especially when outdoors in windy conditions.

Does what it says on the package.. I have had no problems with the Ride video mic
Picks up clear quality recording which sounds so professional when editing.
I have used the mic in various locations soon to be used at a few festivals and concerts. So far no complaints.

Well I couldn't believe it. In a little box with a product window was this microphone. All lovely in go faster red with Rode emblazoned on the mic foam. I attached it to my gopro and shot some test footage.

I was blown away with how crisp the sound was! Far better than the 3 little holes the gopro tells me are microphone holes. Boy, I can tell you this much, you can hear the cat fart in the other room with this microphone, assuming you point it at the cat through the wall that is.

All in all, I recommend this as a great way to not sound like a gargling ogre in a blender when shooting videos. My videos are still garbage, but at least they sound good.

I bought this mic for using on youtube videos on my Canon 600D DSLR.
As there is no gain control you have to use the inbuilt camera gain and this just leads to an unbearable hiss.
I know this is a combination of both camera and mic but it's just unusable if you want professional quality audio conveniently.
