Over the last few years since retiring I have tried to replicate my SLR kit using digital instead of film, but I have always been disappointed in various aspects of the technology. So, I decided to abandon all my 'proper' cameras, and just buy something simple and reasonably cheap, but with a good lens.
After reading lots of reviews, reading blogs and checking out web reviews, this is the one I plumped for. It also has a rather super Leica lens, which can't be a bad thing.
Result - This is a superb camera.
It has a good weight to it - not a lumpy heavyweight, but not a cheap plastic weight either.
It sits very nicely in the hand, and it is easy to reach and operate all the main controls with the camera up to your eye. I did say viewfinder, yes! That is a real bonus for me, because it is the way I have always worked. My wife prefers a screen image to take pictures with, and a press on the small 'LVF' button on the back panel gives you this as well.
The screen is good quality - and has more than enough information for anyone. For those who want more of a 'point and shoot' option, you can remove all the screen information by pressing the 'DISP.' button, also on the back plate.
The camera has any number of modes, and they are all extremely well thought out. If you have limited experience you can fall back on the 'iA' (Intelligent Auto) button, and you will get perfect pictures 99% of the time.
Like almost all cameras in this price range, it also shoots movies, and they are extremely fine quality too. In addition you have a choice of formats - from 2:3 to 3:4, to widescreen and square. There are plenty of shooting aids to help composition too, with a green horizon line being the one I have on permanently.
Camera shake is pretty much a thing of the past these days, although this camera also has a standard tripod bush should you wish to use a fixed support.
The final image quality, through the Leica lens, is superb. Sharp and clean and, with the ability to take a number of images simultaneously and superimpose them to create images in otherwise difficult lighting conditions, this camera has all the bells and whistles you could wish for.
Overall it is a camera that has a very high build quality, a superb lens and one of the best sets of creative features and filters I have ever seen. Add to this the small size and light weight and you have a camera that can be used by just about anyone, but that will keep an enthusiast happy as well.
It has been by constant companion for the last 6 weeks and I can see the cobwebs appearing on my 'professional' equipment as I type!
Prints are also stunning!
What I hadn't put in the initial review I will reveal here. Firstly, I'm a retired professional photographer who now dislikes humping heavy gear around. And secondly, my transport is now a mobility scooter so, for the most part, I'm restricted to the urban landscape. I'm thankful I live in a city which offers an infinite variety of images.
20 months and over 8000 pictures after buying the TZ60 it is still the camera I reach for first. It goes with me everywhere. As bought it does have a downside - a fully charged battery is good for only 150 pictures. That's about enough to get me halfway into the city centre four miles away. (I tend to see pictures everywhere.) I always carry two or three spares.
As with many travel compact cameras, its flash is underpowered for party pictures but offers a useful fill flash for group pictures when the sun is shining.
But, oh, that zoom lens! You know the times when you think you'd love a close up of the statue at the very top of the building. With the TZ60 you can zoom right in. To get the equivalent image on a DSLR you'd need a 500mm lens costing almost 3x the price and weighing in at over 5x that of the TZ60.
The TZ40 purchased Jan 2015 is still going strong & has been used as a spare camera.
My main reason for the TZ60 purchase was the view finder. It is better in most lighting conditions than the flat screen on the TZ40. Plus I can use the TZ60 without putting my glasses on.
Until it died I had been pleased with the TZ60. We travel a lot by road the TZ60 is compact & easily carried. Because some weeks I can take around 500 images & we can be in two or three countries the camera's main benefit is the GPS system. The GPS allows me to look at a photo years later & see where I took it.
Until it died the TZ60 had been just the job. So much so that I have ordered a replacement TZ60. I hope this was a duff camera & the replacement will last a little longer.
