From the manufacturer
FE 50mm F1.8
Small, light, bright: a great normal prime.
A large-aperture 50mm prime lens is a must-have for serious full-frame camera users, and this is an excellent, affordable choice. The optical design is state-of-the-art for high image quality, and the large F1.8 maximum aperture can produce gorgeous background bokeh. On APS-C format E-mount bodies it provides equally high quality with an equivalent focal length of about 75mm.
Mobile and manageable for active shooting
Matched with a Sony α7 series body this lens provides outstanding handling and mobility in a compact full-frame system. Lens weight is only 186 grams.
Lifelike detail, texture, and gradation
An updated double-gauss optical configuration with an aspherical element minimises spherical aberration and coma for high image quality right out to the image periphery.
Dreamy large-aperture prime lens bokeh
A large F1.8 maximum aperture and 7-blade circular aperture work together to create beautiful background bokeh that can make subjects stand out in deep, dimensional images.
Shoot at night or in dimly lit interiors
An F1.8 maximum aperture makes it easier to shoot clear night or indoor shots. Combined with in-body image stabilisation you can even shoot handheld without boosting ISO.
A lens you can depend on
A metal mount adds a sophisticated feel as well as solid durability.

Its not as fast to focus as the Zeiss 55mm but its perfectly suited to day to day shooting and the optics are punching well above its weight price wise.
I have found its most responsive in AFC but still good in AFS, ergonomics are excellent (better than the 55), weight is perfect and the focus motor is not as loud as reviews suggest, not noticeable at all really once you get going (unless you have some random OCD!!)
The lens has character no doubt about that, images have a great quality especially paired with Sony's fine sensors.
If money were no object I would pick the Zeiss 55mm but money is absolutely a factor for me so this is a great surprise to find the lens is nowhere near as bad as I expected.
So in summary its got its limitations so don't expect to be blown away but for shooting this lens day to day you can't go wrong IMO, its a little beaut!
This lens is brilliant for the price and the photos it takes. They're sharp, with little distortion (none that I have yet to see), great bokeh and fast enough for my needs.
In the lower the F numbers it does struggle to find focus particularly while filming, but otherwise it's average. Also the focus is a little noisy and is quite noticeable when watching back the footage, but largely goes when using a good directional microphone. Without Stabilisation built in to the lens it can suffer a little
Again is suffers from the same auto focus issues in the lower F numbers especially in the single shot AF, but does perform a little more in the continuous AF mode. Does come into its best when using manual focus which is a joy with the smooth focus ring.
Is amazing value. Lots of people have commented on quality of photos. Yes there is better glass than this but look at the price. Get this while you work out your camera for low light and street especially. Then invest in a G lens
