We are still playing this CD frequently, with great pleasure. Eric Whitacre's compositions carry so much emotion - and so many different emotions. His 'Sleep' helps restore a sense of security, tranquility and harmony - even though some of the suspended chords don't resolve as they might be expected, but just hang there, still magical and so surprising, even after many hearings. If I am the modern 'folk' with perhaps less simple tastes, then this could be described as folk music - perhaps as Vivaldi or Handel pleased folk like us, in their time. There is sufficient familiarity to make the music easily accessible but enough freshness to stimulate without losing understanding. 'My son, my son', expresses anguish appropriate to the loss of one's child and is hard to bear if you have that experience: it prompts tears despite the passage of time. For me this is modern classical music at its best, sung and performed at its best.

I'm giving eric's music a go after listening to the track cloud burst on radio3. It's accessible music, cleverly written, with sonic twists that give it a modern edge.
