So there's something from most parts of Madness' career, with the notable exception of the Mad Not Mad album. Presumably the cost of licencing tracks from Virgin/EMI was too high - a shame, since any compilation would have been enhanced with the likes of "I'll Compete", "Yesterday's Men", "Mad Not Mad" or "Burning The Boats".
Some of the songs chosen are a bit left-field. "Calling Cards" from The Rise and Fall, instead of the title track for example? The choice of "Forever Young" from The Liberty of Norton Folgate, ahead of "NW5" is another strange pick. And no room for "Victoria Gardens"? Pity.
For anybody looking for an introduction to the group, this does at least have the virtue of going beyond the obvious choices - even if some, as I've said, seem to have been selected at random.Read more ›
This means that you end up with quite a few tracks 'doubled' and missing 'Our House', 'death of rude boy' for example
CD1 digital info comes listed as 'Complete Madness' - so looks like wrong CD in the case even though it's named 'The Very Best of CD1'
The one thing that made it lose a star was that when I tried to rip the CD my system kept telling me that discs were from a different (Madness) CD. However, it plays as per 'The very best of' track listing. This makes ripping the CD a bit of a pain, but it is worth it for a great CD at a very competitive price.
