Format: Audio CD
This isn't the ultimate collection of Jackie's music (as the title might suggest) but it is nevertheless a magnificent showcase for her talents.
All the sixties classics that Jackie is famous for, whether as singer or as songwriter. Here you will find What the world needs now (a Bacharach-David song that was a British and American top ten hit for Jackie), Put a little love in your heart (Jackie's biggest American hit, which she wrote). Many people think that Jackie wrote Needles and pins - she didn't, but it was her version that the Searchers covered. It became a major international hit for them and this encouraged them to record some of Jackie's own songs, most notably When you walk in the room.
Aside from the famous songs, this collection contains many excellent covers of other people's songs that demonstrate Jackie's brilliance and versatility. Apart from Needles and pins and What the world needs now, these include Don't let the sun catch you crying, It's all in the game, Summertime, You don't have to say you love me, Will you love me tomorrow and Call me.
Jackie has been poorly served by CD releases but things are slowly improving. This collection makes an ideal introduction to Jackie's music but will also be of interest to those who have some of her other CD compilations - some of the tracks here have not appeared on CD before.

Its difficult to describe just how good this album is, and what a tragedy Jackie deShannon is so little known in the UK. Best known for her 60's songwriting skills (When You Walk Into The Room etc), she led the way for country rock & soul with this album in 1972. It should stand alongside seminal albums such as Burritos #3, Workingman's Dead and Garden Party for music of this genre. What sets this aside is the fine quality of song, and the understated playing of the Muscle Shoals session legends. There is a slight pop sheen to the music, but it is made interesting by innovative time signatures and arrangements that prevail throughout. This probably lost the country audience at the time (no bad thing), but failed to cement her in the stable of quality singer/songwriters where she belonged. Any fan of Tom Rush, Van Morrison, Dan Penn, Guy Clark, Laura Nyro or Willis Allen Ramsey should purchase with confidence.

Jackie de shannon is one of the underrated singer/ songwriters of the last 40 years. Thankfully many of her albums are being re-released along with many bonus tracks. This is one of her strongest and most consistent albums. The backing from the muscles shoals musicians is excellent and gives Jackie room to spread out her singing and feelings. The bonus tracks produced by Van Morrison are a real find and although not top notch Morrison or De Shannon material are still worth a listen. As an introduction to this artist you cannot do better.

By Peter Uys HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 20 Nov. 2004
Format: Audio CD
On this album of her greatest hits, Jackie DeShannon straddles many musical styles with grace. Her own compositions and some songs that she first recorded have been covered by many other artists down the decades.
Annie Lennox and Al Green covered Put A Little Love In Your Hart, When You Walk In The Room and Needles And Pins were made huge hits by The Searchers and have seen many other versions since then, whilst Come And Stay With Me was a hit for Marianne Faithfull. All of the songs here are very strong, with moving lyrics set to sublime melodies.
Other highlights include What The World Needs Now Is Love and Love Will Find A Way, but every track is really a gem. DeShannon had a fine pop sensibility and a lovely voice; the arrangements are great too. The most conspicuous omissions are Vanilla O'Lay (a minor hit for Twiggy) and Bette Davis' Eyes from her 1975 album New Arrangement, later made a hit by Kim Carnes.
Those two, plus many other memorable tracks, are available on the Best Of compilation on the Rhino label. Those who like Spector style girl group pop, 1960s folk-pop and authentic soft rock will find much to enjoy on this album. It is worthwhile to add to your collection even if you own the aforementioned Rhino collection, even if only for the poignant ballad Come And Stay With Me.
