By Peter Uys HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 18 Oct. 2002
Format: Audio CD
An exquisite musical menagerie with ideas drawn from the four corners of the world. Producer is Daniel Lanois and musicians of stature like Brian Eno, Manu Katche and the Babacar Faye drummers assist. Roots instruments like the djembe, sabar drums, tama surdu and doukdouk spice up the sound with delicious results. The opener Come Talk To Me starts with the mournful drone of bagpipes and African drums, reaches a high point with a magnificent vocals & drum chorus and fades out on grieving sitar infusions. The influence of Lanois is very much in evidence here and on Blood Of Eden, with dense layers of dreamy sounds and yearning, spiritual vocals. Love To Be Loved combines Brian Eno, the Valiha (a Malagasy instrument) and the tabla, for a lovely exotic sound. Kiss That Frog sports some tight rock riffs. Digging In The Dirt and Steam are more mainstream rock songs. Warm, powerful and multi-faceted.

liked gabriels work with genesis and ive heard one or two tracks from his solo work that i enjoyed too. took a chance with this one cos to be honest ive never sat through an entire solo album so i thought id give it a go.

what we have is fairly cold and passionless electro-pop, not really saying much at all and pretty meaningless throughout. its all very well played and produced but the songs? i dunno. they dont seem that strong to me folks. theyre all fairly one-paced and samey. maybe im missing the point? i dont think so though. to me this sounds like just another over-lauded and over-rated performer who doesnt really warrant his high status

A controversial title to fans, perhaps, but in my opinion this (and the Secret World live album) is Peter Gabriel at the height of his powers.
Soulful, original lyrics provide beautiful imagery - almost as beautiful as the carefully woven threads of percussion joining together. Gabriel's voice, showing its age, is heartfelt and full of yearning and melancholy.
There are many places to start, if you are interested in Peter Gabriel and this is as good as any. Accessible without compromising any of his talent this album, largely about relationships, can speak to many. With grace and beauty.

Definitely one of my favourite albums of the 1990s. Many cameo appearances by other highbrow musos such as Brian Eno, Peter Hammill and William Orbit. The soundscape is like no other album you'll ever hear - a broad range of "ethnic" instruments swirl around Gabriel's raw voice. Two things stand out about this album - the incredibly sophisticated percussion, and the spine-tingling honesty of the lyrics. Impeccable production from Lanois. Buy this album now, it will be a friend for life.

Released in 1992 and recorded over three continents-Europe(Bath,England),America(New Orleans) and Africa(Senegal),'Us' is a revealing album which deals with relationships and is dedicated to the people who Peter Gabriel in his own words 'has loved and who have taught me to love'.'Come Talk To Me' opens the album with it's aching bagpipes and drum loops.Sinead O Connor shares vocals here as she does on the third track 'Blood Of Eden'.Sandwiched inbetween is the powerful 'Love To Be Loved'.'Steam' is uptempo and reminiscent of THAT hit from 1986's 'So'-Gabriels last studio album.'Only Us' is up next, this with it's stop-start guitar loops, electronic drums and violin is one of the most powerful and outstanding tracks on the album.'Washing Of The Water' is musically mellow but lyrically stunning particularly the final verse where he begs 'kill that fear of emptiness-that loneliness I'll hide'.The first single taken from the album 'Digging In The Dirt'(which is about his divorce) shook me down to my shoelaces when I first heard it on the radio and was the reason I bought the album. It is indeed about 'digging in the dirt' and trying to find out where one got hurt'.
Clocking in at 4 minutes and 36 seconds 'Fourteen Black Paintings' is the shortest track here but it possesses an intensity which is almost unbearably overpowering. It is made up of only four sentences about people bringing change but the way it builds to a climax is both moving and stunning.'Kiss That Frog' could be described as a 'filler' and indeed it is the lightest track but the rhythym is king here. The closer 'Secret World' is a haunting seven minute love song, many people's favourite and a fitting way to end a magnificent album.
'Us' is definitely a 'grower',it takes time, patience and repeated listens to fully appreciate it.It is deep, intense and at times an extremely touching album with which I can never grow bored.
