By The Wolf TOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 16 Jun. 2013
Format: Audio CD
The Casady sisters Sienna and Bianca have always been up for a bit
of weirdness. Weavers of strange dreams and poignant oddities, their
new album 'Tales Of A Grasswidow' continues their journey into some
of the listening world's most elusive corners. There is a somewhat
stronger rhythmic drive in these eleven compositions than we have
encountered in their previous work. This has much to do with their
collaboration with producer Valgeir Sigurosson who brings added weight
and subtle texture to this wonderfully wayward duo's sonic inventions.

Standout tracks would have to include the magical opening number 'After
The Afterlife', a pretty nursery rhyme of a song, full of fleeting shadows,
fractured piano and a backbeat almost fit for for the dancefloor; the darkly
dubby 'Tears For Animals' with its affecting warbled interludes courtesy
of Antony Hegarty; 'Broken Chariot', which touches an ancient nerve with
its pagan bells, whistles and brittle vocal shards and the ephemeral but
strangely beautiful 'Far Away', channeling Bjork and Laurie Anderson in
the creation of a novel form of soul for the spaces between the stars.

Captivating, quirky, curiously touching and in its own small way quite unique.

Recommended.

Very idiosyncratic, imaginative and listenable, at least for me. One of the sisters has a voice like Bjork crossed with Shirley Temple.

A wonderfully idiosynchratic LP, just as one expects from CocoRosie. Well worth adding it to your collection.
