Product description

Product Description

Stellular is the title-track of a shockingly confident new album, 11 tracks of classic songwriting, all defiantly modern, glowing with clarity and purpose. It is, in Rose’s own words ”something bolder, less apologetic, more decisive… a sophisticated pop record” It is an album rooted in the London lives that shaped its lyrics, the lives and experiences of Rose's friends as their 20s slipped by in a haze of late nights, broken hearts and struggles in an increasingly unforgiving capital. "The last decade in this country has been a really fucking weird time to be young. There's a theme of promises that are falling apart, and negotiating the wreckage of choices you might make that actually start to become less flippant and do have long-standing effects on your future.” Working with producer and friend Oli Bayston, AKA producer Boxed In, the pair started by crafting small ideas, a simple rhythm, drum noises, or a sound on a Korg Delta, exploring the "essential" part of Rose’s songwriting. The plan was to make the record from a limited sonic palette, to give everything a defined aesthetic. This philosophy stretches back to Rose’s days in The Pipettes - a band built on a manifesto for the perfect pop group by the KLF's Bill Drummond.

Amazing album - Rose's songwriting is now approaching the level of that incredible, English blue-skies voice of hers - and there's no bigger compliment I can think of than that - it's a voice - as with Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell - that's so captivating, so personal and distinctive, yet seems to embody every girl/woman one has ever cared about. Delicate as a butterfly, strong as a mountain ... The Beatles first album was called "With The Beatles" - because that's where everybody wanted to be - and that's how you feel when you listen to this astonishingly under-exposed singer-songwriter as she moves into maturity. Spread the word!

Close to seven years since the release of the excellent 'Without Why' will the long awaited return of Rose Elinor Dougall be a cause for celebration or a disappointing anti climax? It's almost two weeks since I excitedly peeled the wrapper from this c.d. That's nearly a fortnight of repeated plays to ensure that I don't hastily pass judgement or let my obvious bias get in the way. It's been a frustrating seven years waiting for the release of 'Stellular', especially when observing lesser talents than Dougall mop up the plaudits while endlessly churning out weaker material. When THAT voice first appears through the weaving tendrils of guitar on 'Colour Of Water' it's such a feeling of joy and relief to know that the lady is back. And by the time you reach the happy clapping self worth ratification of the title track, then you know it's not just a flash in the pan either. Songs like 'Take Yourself With You', 'Answer Me', 'Poison Ivy' and 'Wanderer' are so ridiculously catchy and infectious it's pointless trying to describe them, except to add that Dougall is still writing personal heart on sleeve lyrics, and doesn't mind sharing them with us. Production wise this album is commendably clean and upfront. Fans of a good thumping drum sound and solid, salient bass will be pleased with the clarity here, particularly on the four to the floor stomp of 'All At Once'. It's to the credit of Dougall and producer Oli Bayston that this album doesn't get bogged down by the identikit indie tropes that seem to straightjacket many other so called 'alternative' acts, and the surprises just keep on coming.Read more ›

i must say I am a little more than slightly obsessed with this album, I just cant listen to it enough. "Stellular" is pretty much the perfect pop album, from the opening track (and possibly stand out of the album) 'Colour of Water' to the stripped back beauty of final track 'Wanderer' this album is just a joy from start to finish!
