Product description

"THE SOUND OF THE SMITHS" is brand new compilation of the definitive British independent band of the eighties - Produced with the full co-operation of Morrissey and Johnny Marr: Morrissey provided the title and Johnny Marr personally supervised the mastering, their joint invlovement ensuring that this is the most impactful look back at the Smiths' extraordinary career to date.

The Sound Of The Smiths is available as either a single disc or two disc collection. Disc one comprises 23 tracks and presents all the Smiths' memorable single releases, reinstating singles that were scheduled though eventually unreleased in that form ("Still Ill" and "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby") plus European only singles including "Barbarism Begins At Home" and "The Headmaster Ritual". The core of disc one, however, is that matchless run of singles from their first Rough Trade 7 inch "Hand In Glove" to the posthumous "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me". The collection includes genuine classic hits such as "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", "How Soon Is Now", "Panic" and "Girlfriend in A Coma" which marked the pinnacle of that unique creative collaboration between vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr. Indeed, Morrissey's eloquence and proselytising was always matched by the compelling musicianship of Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce.

The two disc format adds a further 22 tracks including rare b-sides, tracks that were exclusive to 12 inch releases and selected live recordings. Among the rarities are the Troy Tate produced "Pretty Girls Make Graves", "What's The World", a cover of a track from the fellow Manchester band James, recorded live at Barrowlands, Glasgow, originally released only on a cassette single and the live "Meat Is Murder" from the vinyl 12 inch single version of "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore".

Bought for the extra tracks, already have the original.
Love the track Jeane and This Charming Man alternative version whatever you call it.
I'd recommend buying this instead of the standard CD worth it for the extras.
Im not an expert on The Smith's I didn't really get into them in the 80s, even turned down seeing them friend had spare ticket. How silly I was, pass me the time machine.

Great cd, great collection of songs from a very good band.
the songs do sound loud and more crisp compared to earlier compilations that had far less tracks on.
If your going to buy one smiths cd then it should be this one.
I won't go into all the different songs I will just say this has all the well known songs on it and more.
It's the cd I would recommend out of all smiths cds.

Buy it for CD2. From the original Hand in Glove live b-side of Handsome Devil to the ropey but loveable James cover-version (previously only available to me on my friend's much-coveted cassette single). Both CD1 and CD2 combine to remind that Morrissey and Marr were never so subversive and beautiful as they were when they were writing and performing together. As an ageing ardent fan who bought the singles as they came out, but who isn't a completist, this compilation has been a joy, pulling together all the famous tracks, but more importantly, the b-sides and oddities so beautifully. CD2 is my most played Smiths 'thing', which means I can finally give the singles a well earned rest. Don't bother with the overpriced deluxe about to be released, go for the underpriced delight.

On of the best Smiths compilations and remastered - better than Jap pressings.

pity no Draize train track or sandie shaw A-side as well.

Dirt cheap considering low-fi mp3 file alternatives.

Thoroughly recommended.

I have most of The Smiths albums (sadly most of the older ones on tape, gosh how old am I?) and bought this as it included a remastered live version of Meat is Murder.
The original recording was played on Radio 1 I think and mine was a copy of a copy of a copy so very poor quality. The whole album is worth it for that one track (and the revisiting of my youth) alone.

I previously owned The Best of the Smiths.I found it pretty much impossible to listen to, way too compressed and brittle.I was sceptical about this latest offering. My fears were unfounded, the sound is excellent. Both CDs sound smooth, but with plenty of clarity. The big plus for me is that "How Soon is Now",as well as"This Charming Man",are both the 12" versions.
