This intriguing trio album was led by drummer Max Roach(1924-2007) with bassist Art Davis(1934-2007) and the sadly neglected Philadelphian pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali(1931-80) who played with many famous jazz musicians but can be heard only on this recording from December, 1964.
All seven powerful and exhilarating tracks are by Hasaan who acknowledges pianist Elmo Hope as an influence.
The innovative music from Hasaan and this empathetic trio deserves to be more widely known.

Btw ~ Alan Sukoenig's interesting note on the back of this Japanese 1000 YEN CD reissue require the eyes of a hawk or a powerful magnifying glass.

This is such a great album, well recorded with good separation, wonderful musicianship and Hasaan was an exceptional pianist. Pity there is no more of his output available.

Of course MR is amazing on this album as well, one has to listen to these old jazz masters to realize how good / how innovative they were ; certainly compared to much of the schlock available now.

Listen, discover & enjoy !

5.0 out of 5 stars Three-Four Vs. Six-Eight, Four-Four Ways 15 Feb. 2017

Breathtaking and intense improvisatory piano jazz. The opening track, "Three-Four Vs. Six-Eight, Four-Four Ways" is jaw-droppingly great. The feverish pitch of this music is powerful and it's great to hear jazz of this period in clear, crisp stereo. A must-have item.

Initially i was disappointed in this record, because I was expecting something more unique. After several listens, I have begun to appreciate the uniqueness!
