Wheat - Hope And Adams - Cd

Amazon.co.uk Review

After the release of their first album, Medeiros, Massachusetts-based band Wheat weren't sure if they would release--or even record--a follow up. It's fortunate for everyone, then, that they did: Hope And Adams, their second album, is a masterpiece. Produced by Dave Fridmann--who previously worked on such modern classics as Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs and the Flaming Lips The Soft Bulletin--Hope And Adams is suffused with an understated elegance, at once melancholy and exhilarating. Like Pavement, Wheat eschew traditional song structures, but their songs are often more melodic and tender, leaning towards the emotional as opposed to the strictly cerebral. Furthermore, instead of the surreal, meandering vocals by many of their wilfully lo-fi contemporaries, Wheat's lyrics are heartfelt and thoughtful (especially on tracks "San Diego" and "Off The Pedestal"). Frontman Scott Levesque's vocals are often reminiscent of Radiohead's Thom Yorke in their delivery, simultaneously implying depths of yearning and heights of optimism, while drummer Brendan Harney and guitarist Ricky Brennan alternately ground the songs or cause them to soar, capturing and expanding the mood. In a year of great music, Hope And Adams is one of 1999's best releases. --Robert Burrow

I had this strongly recommended and on first couple of listens started to question my mates sanity, then the tunes begin to creep into your soul and you are hooked. Give it time and Hope and Adams could become a major part of your listening experience!

This album is so underated, in my opinion one the greatest lo-fi albums of the 1990's and even blossoming into the 2000's. For it's place and meaning, music and every day freshness it is remarkable. Even now in 2007 whenever I pop the CD in and sit in my favorite chair, I close my eyes and drift away in the music and words. The songs are sharp, short and sweet and I can leave all my troubles at the door. Stand out tracks are the beautiful 'Who's the one', the popular 'Don't I hold You'. The beauty of this album is somebody will discover a gem for themselves and there are many. Very floating harmonies and music I could only compare to Sigur Ros but noticeably much shorter in terms of length. This album is a forgotten / undiscovered masterpiece which I will long be playing into the NEXT decade.

Mesmerising album that built a brilliant soundscape on top of some lovely folky pop songs. Their début album Medeiros had some good songs, but Hope & Adams really delivered and was rightly an Indie hit. Don't I Hold You, Body Talk, Raised Ranch Revolution, just really fine songs with subtle playing and intriguing lyrics.

Wheat take a delightful blend of indie, rock and mellow-ness and make it something truly special. It kind of sounds like a happy Radiohead at times. Any fan of chilling out should own at least one copy of this album. Excellent!

I first heard Don't I Hold You on the radio and after that I was desperate to buy the album. Hope and Adams is one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. And Someone With Strengths makes me want to cry, whilst No One Ever Told Me makes me happy. An album full of emotion that everybody should buy!

Let me down after several exceptional Amazon reviews. There is a certain charm to be found on this record and the guitars are certianly well structured and support the songs well. However there are only 4-5 descent songs on here?
