This is an essential real funk collection for anybody out there who likes a bit of funk already or is thinking about dabbling.
All the tracks are good but the stand out for me is 'What about you (in the world today)' which is extraordinary alone for being just vocals and drums. The track is so funky that I didn't even notice the absence of other instruments until the 4th or 5th listen!(who needs over produced modern soul/r&b with multi layered instruments??). I honestly don't think anybody would be disappointed with this album. If they are shoot them!

...and the artists featured all got paid. Never has a funk compilation been treated with so much care, and the artists handed back the respect they deserve.
From the inlay booklet: "Over the past year, we've worked exhaustively to prepare a fully licensed compilation that will help explain the musical stories of sixteen American funk legends. We've tracked down photos, run master reels, annotated sessions and negotiated a fair deal for all those involved. All so that you can finally catch a glimpse into the lives and times of the musicians that helped inform the funk movement."
But the package is second only to the music featured here. Topped and tailed by an intro and outro by Herb Miller's Ebony Rhythm Band and featuring a nice cut-up piece by Cut Chemist at the end, this covers some of the nicest, fattest, rarest (some unreleased) and above all the best of US Funk.
Buy it buy it buy it, I can't recommend this enough. Your CD player will love you for the rest of your life.

A rather neat idea to expose the lesser known funky bands in the USA by producing an album that will give these bands a fair share in sales. That alone gets a thumbs up from me. I own the Funk Spectrum trilogy, which I love to death. (Look for Funk Spectrum 1, 2 and 3 separately). This album is on par with those ones, although the one major difference is that where as the Funk Spectrum albums have a variation and allow the user to recover from amazing tracks with a selection of less dirty in your face tracks. This CD though is in your face all the time. That is not a bad thing, but without a little variation it can become a little ‘samey’.
The standout track is the on the album is named after, but the others are just as good., I agree with the other reviewers that this album is brilliant, but as I like a tadge more variation in a compilation I have to knock a star off of it. I’d recommend the fast selling out Funk Spectrum Series if you like a bit of a mix of styles, otherwise this is a sound purchase.
