On 24 December 2011, Chris de Souza surveyed recordings of Britten's, The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, and made this his #1 choice among all available recordings.

It was not an issue for him, or for me, that there is no narration on this version, just the glorious music. Those desiring a version with narration must look elsewhere.

I was not disappointed in that the BBC's "Building a Library" recommended this version. The great thing is that it was conducted by the composer; a useful point, considering the composer knows exactly how his composition should be played. Another relief compared to some other versions is that there are no interruptions by narrators explaining the instruments used in the piece. Music straight through from start to finish!

No argument with others' assessment of this Young Person's Guide as the best available, and the Rossini fill-ups are fun and well-played. I've only avoided giving 5 stars because of a curious feature of the Peter Grimes pieces, which is that two of them (Sunday Morning and the Passacaglia) appear not to be the orchestral arrangements of these numbers but to be lifted straight from Britten's recording of the opera - so that the (uncredited) voices of Claire Watson and Peter Pears make brief and incongruous appearances towards the end of each - Pears as the mad Grimes merely bellowing "Go there!" three times, not making any sense out of context. A real pity on such a good disc.
