Violin music isn't normally my thing, but I've looked for M. Kavakos for a long time - ever since getting his stunning performance of the Berg. And am I awestruck by this reading - am I ever. It flows by spinning a continuous thread of beautiful tone - the pianissimos make you want to hold your breath, the folk melodies are never very far away; the orchestral accompaniment glows. He knows exactly what he wants to say, and it's a privilege to let him take you there. You know that bit in The English Patient where Kip hoists Hanna into the church tower to gasp at the paintings? It had that effect on me.

Thank you, M Kavakos, and thanks to all the reviewers whose advice encouraged me to buy this.

In the discography of this great work, there is a succession of great performers - Heifitz, Oistrakh, (with Szell), Perlman and more recently Szneider. I had the privilege of hearing Kovakos play this with Chailly and his great Gewandhaus orchestra at the Barbican and this disc does not disappoint. Kovakas commands the full pallet of colours, glorious poetry and the hint of mania which the piece allows. i would put him and his great colleague Chailly up there with the all-time greats. Wonderful modern sound is a bonus.

A worthy addition to an already overcrowded recording market of the concerto...Although I prefer Repin's magnificent rendition with the same forces under Chailly...Kavakos bring fresh insight into the work with elegant phrasing and lyrical tone throughout the performance...what he misses out on is the sheer fire and brilliance of the last movement that Repin so marvellously achieves along with Vengerov's version under Barenboim.

Excellent CD and although there are many recordings of this concert, I think this is essential if you love classical music.

I have several recordings of the Brahms VC, but on balance, I reckon that this performance tops them all !
