I first heard this band when Mike Harding played 'Uca's Dance' on his Radio 2 show in October 2012. I checked out a few more tracks on YouTube and was completely blown away especially by the song 'Sing Unto Me'. However it soon becomes apparent that the showcasing uptempo opener is not characteristic of the rest of the album. That is not to say that the rest is any way weaker as every track is very different and it's so refreshing to see a young band revelling in playing this sort of music in an age of X Factor pap. They have obviously honed their musicianship through years of hard graft and have a whole host of influences from classical, jazz, rock and klezmer which they have blended together into a bewitching concoction of instrumentation, singing and harmonising.

Although everyone in the band is extremely talented I do love the violin solos and Fairport Convention's best albeit very brief incarnation was when they had Sandy Denny's vocals and Dave Swarbrick's exquisite fiddle in the line up. I am also very pleased I bought the CD rather than downloaded it as a MP3 because a lot of care and effort has gone into producing the lavish artwork. I like to read lyrics as well which in this case are literate with some songs leaning towards an Angela Carter like fairyland.

British folk seems to be in a very healthy state at the moment and I was lucky enough to see The Unthanks live last year. I very much look forward to catching The Moulettes live and I wish them every future success as they thoroughly deserve it.

Some reviews I've seen of this CD have suggested that it is not quite up to the standard of the first. In my view that's simply not the case. In many ways it's an interesting progression - perhaps more upbeat, uptempo (for instance the first two tracks) and a little less quirky (in the best possible sense) than the first but in no way of lesser quality. The instrumental range seems to have been extended - some interesting extension of the use of drums for example - great production, and the singing is as tight, exciting and beautifully executed as ever. Well worth five stars - it's a great listen.

This album is outstanding. I can't stop listening, the more I listen the more I love it!! The instruments, violin, cello, basoon, double bass, guitar and drums and beautiful vocal harmonies expose very fine musicianship indeed. Each track is a work of art, with influences from gypsy, classical, folk, klesmer, choral. Always strongly melodic and varied from upbeat dance tunes to slow and haunting, this music is unique, exciting, beautiful and really really mesmerising.

The Bears Revenge is an absolute work of art. Not just the music but the album design too (designed by the singer).
From the first listen, you are thrown into a world of complete awe. Massive, violent strings, stunning vocal harmony, quirky visions of strange new worlds and arrangements to die for.
The album works as a complete whole. To skip a track is to miss the point of the journey, although its worth pointing out that the highs, such as Uca's Dance, Songbird and Unlock The doors are likely never to come back down from the mountain. They belong there, in the clouds where the hot air balloon's come floating by.
It's fair to say that Songbird is the bands masterpiece. It rips your heart out and yet manages to soar. A stone cold classic.
The album is of even more interest because of its brilliant use of fantasy worlds and influence from books such as His Dark Materials and Lord Of The Rings. Yes, it can be prog rock at times (not a problem for me!), lashings of folk influence and the best elements of pop.
There are elements of early Queen, Fairport Convention, Kate Bush (especially The Dreaming album) mixed with the soundtracks of The Wicker Man and Valerie and her week of wonders. Seriously!
Do yourself a favour, this is the real deal. I saw them after I bought the album, at Cropredy. It was sensational. They are frighteningly good live.

Having caught Moulettes live at the Cropredy festival this summer, and been bowled over by their mix of folk, prog, classical, jazz and goodness knows what else, I had to buy the album to see if they had managed to capture the excitement and fun in the studio. I'm happy to say that they have. There are so many layers to their music that you could keep listening for ages and still hear new things in it.

If you;re hesitating, don't. Buy it!

I saw them at the Cropredy Festival this year (2013), and I was part of the undignified feeding frenzy buying their CDs at the tent afterwards. Nor was I disappointed. The Bear's Revenge is my new favourite CD. Songbird is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, but the other tracks are merely very good.
I have given that CD as a Xmas present to a good friend who I think will appreciate it, and bought another copy from Amazon.

Me and a few friends first heard of the Moulettes after going to a folk festival in Bournemouth, and found out the Moulettes were playing that very evening. Mostly a sit down festival, these guys were one of the only few to get the crowd up and really intrigued into what they were doing.

As the set went on by the 7-8 piece, it became obvious that every song carried tale after tale and backed by an orchestra of very talented chaps and chappesses. Sooner enough, the set was all over before we knew it. We were mind blown. As we filtered out of the venue, we saw by the front desk next to a lot of other merch was a little album about a Bears Revenge. We bought it straight away for the journey back.

This album will take you on a multi-genre journey that shouldn't be explained, but heard. Since, we've seen these guys at their album launch party in late May, which had Seasick Steve supporting.

(As a bonus, got to meet the guys after the festival and signed our copy - yeh boi!)
