Product description

Product Description

Original recordings produced by EGRAM, Cuba 1963-67 - with 30 page booklet; Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) provided an extraordinary soundtrack to Sixties Havana. Their unique sound - the vocal virtuosity of doo-wop and the twang of electric guitar pop combined with an inspired take on bolero, calypso, bossa nova and the rhythmic heritage of Cuba - makes for incredible listening today.

I never thought I'd buy CD's from the World Music section, but once in a while, you hear tracks that make it worth your while.
About the time of the late Kirsty MacColl's tragic accident, BBC Radio 2 were broadcasting a series she'd nearly completed for the station on Cuban music, and I saw a video on "Buena Vista Social Club". Both opened me up to Cuban music, some by old performers, and groups that broke up years ago - as is the case with Los Zafiros.
"Bossa Cubana" is an example of a 1960's Cuban band with a unique hybrid style - doo-wop, calypso, bossa nova, and traditional Cuban music. There are some stand out tracks on the CD, including "La Luna en tu Mirada" and "Dichoso Mar". The group, and this CD, offer something that is a little different than other groups and records - certainly a unique collection. Adding this to a CD/record collection, whether your only Cuban album, or one of several in a World Music collection, would be adding something unusual. A one off!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have 23 July 1999

These guys are amazing. The music -- a fusion of salsa, bossa nova, doo-wop, R&B and more -- is great, and surprisingly sophisticated. The vocals are fantastic -- and the tenor (soprano?) of Ignacio Elejalde blows away Frankie Lymon or any other doo-wop legend you can name.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album 3 Jun. 2013
By Savonarola - Published on Amazon.com

This is a collection of the best of Los Zafiros from their mid-60s high point. They take American Doo-Wop and R&B and mix it in with more traditional Latin beats to create a really cool sound. If you're a fan of both Frankie Valli and The Buena Vista Social Club than you'll like this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLUE MADNESS 14 Jun. 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

THIS IS THE VERY BEST OF THE ZAFIROS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN TITLED THAT! IT'S NOT JUST THE SONGS BUT THE MASTERING AND QUALITY OF THE SOUND THAT MAKES THIS THE BEST CD (TO DATE) OF THE ZAFIROS, AS FAR AS THE MUSIC WHAT CAN BE SAID...IT'S FABULOUS..IT'S FRANKIE LYMON MEETS THE PLATTERS BUT BETTER...THE ZAFIROS WERE FOR VOICES AND ONE GUITAR AND ALL FOUR SINGERS WERE LEAD SINGERS..NOT JUST ONE SINGER AND THE OTHERS STRICTLY BACKING..THEY EACH HAD DIFFERENT STYLES AND INTERPRETED THE SONGS BEAUTIFULLY...THIS CD CAPTURES ALL OF THE MAGIC...FROM THE STEAMY BALLADS TO THE UP-TEMPO DANCEABLES THEY WILL ALL BECOME FAVORITES..JUST LISTEN..THE DOO-WOP INFLUENCE IS TREMENDOUS CONSIDERING THIS GROUP WAS BORN AFTER THE EMBARGO WHEN NOTHING AMERICAN WAS WELCOMED IN CUBA..IT'S TOO BAD THEY NEVER MADE IT TO THE STATES. THERE'S ALSO SOME INTERESTING ANECDOTES IN THE LINER... A MUST!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great surprise 20 April 2000

I always loved musics like Bossa Nova, Doo Wop, and similars, but the first time I heard a song by Los Zafiros, my devotion to them began to grow rapidly. The more that I heard the more that I like. The voice of Ignacio Elejalde It's, for me, greater than Tony Williams of The Platters. A great gift for people who love 60's sounds like Bossa Nova, Doo Wop, and, specially any cuban sounds.
