This album is a luxurious listening experience, in no small part due to Johnny Mandel's gorgeous strings and the lush piano chords of Lee Musiker. But it is Bennett's album, and he has rarely sounded better than on this collection , giving measured, finely nuanced interpretations of some seriously classy songs. Bennett is an ideal interpreter of romantic, rueful pieces like "Close Enough for Love" and "I Remember You", where his heartfelt style yields great results. We also enjoy his special lyrics for Django's "Nuages", here revived as "All for You" (incidentally, check out Susannah McCorkle's very different lyric for this music on her CD "From Broken Hearts to Blue Skies").

All in all, it's a superb album and a worthy Grammy winner. Classy, cool and sincere, Bennett remains at the top of his game.

CONTENT:

“The Art of Romance” by Tony Bennett, released by RPM/Columbia from US in 2004, is a single CD with 11 songs. I have compiled a song listing (including album label & number, chart position, release date)(BB200=Billboard Album Chart; UK=UK Album Chart):

LP “THE ART OF ROMANCE” (RPM/Columbia CK 92820)(BB200 65/2004; UK 101/2004):
01 Close Enough For Love
02 All in Fun
03 Where Do You Start
04 Little Did I Dream
05 I Remember You
06 Time To Smile
07 All For You
08 The Best Man
09 Don’t Like Goodbyes
10 Being Alive
11 Gone With the Wind

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 This album, produced by Phil Ramone, won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. On it, Bennett became a songwriter for the first time in his long career, by penning the lyrics for the song "All for You".
2 This album nimbly revolves around themes of love. Rich orchestral arrangements by Johnny Mandel, Musiker, and others augment Bennett's quartet. Made up of mostly dreamy ballads and light, mid-tempo pieces, this album focuses on stellar standards and other lesser-known tunes that speak of love's rapture and its loss. The charmingly sentimental songs "I Remember You" and "Don't Like Goodbyes" are poignant works that reinforce Bennett's ability (at age 78) to really get inside of a lyric and make it his own. Each heartrending piece on this record sees Bennett crooning over lush, legato strings, gentle piano musings, and whispery brushwork (except "Being Alive”). A wonderful romantic album!
3 The sound was wonderfully remastered by famed Bob Ludwig at his Gateway Studios. The resultant sound was simply perfect!

This album transports me to the 40s and 50s and I wasn't even born in any of those decades! that's the power of Tony Bennett, and this album is no less than any of his greatest singles and records of the gold decades... Phil Ramone (Billy Joel) production makes it sound so clean that you'll feel dirty after listening to it, you can hear every single instrument and note of the orchestra, the pianos are just beautifully rounded...
Tony could easily live out of his catalogue but he continues to record music regardless of his age, and wao! this record is just a living proof of it! listen to 'Time to Smile' for a good dance! it's so damn good!

This album truly delivers great songs, great feel ... and that amazing voice that never fades away. Hats off to Mr. Bennett!

Oh one more thing go and see this man in concert... you just wouldn't believe your eyes and ears. I heard sing sing 'a capella' in the Royal Albert Hall, I had tears coming out of my eyes... I've never experience something like that.

Let the Music Play!

Yet another great Tony Bennett album mixing some familiar material with other lesser known classics. The title sums it up - romantic music beautifully sung by a guy, amazingly, still at the top of his game.

I'd forgotten just how good this album is. It came out for playing for the first time in a couple of years and its been played an awful lot and given enormous pleasure on every occasion. Some people take issue with Tony Bennnett's phrasing and some of the criticism is justified but I don't grumble with this. There are some really excellent songs (some familiar; others less so). All beautifully arranged and performed. Art indeed.
