Review

`Encyclopaedic in scope, with well considered and intelligent advice on almost every subject a home-worker might trip over, from running a business to household politics...Quite genuinely a compelling read.'
--liveworkhomes.co.uk

From the Author

I noticed from my own experience, and from dealing with many home businesses as a business adviser, that home workers tend to be very hard on themselves. We assume that any difficulties we face are personal failings, that we lack discipline, are easily distracted and prone to procrastination. But the fact is that working in the same place as you live creates its own challenges, and I want to make home workers aware of this and offer some solutions.
I spoke to more than 50 home workers all over the country, in both rural and city locations, in all kinds of industries, from sales to B&B, from bookkeepers to craftsmen, and asked about the challenges they had faced, their successes and failures. They were all incredibly open about the pros and cons of home working and gave me some great stories for the book.
What became evident is that different people find different solutions to the same problem, and sometimes quite the opposite solution! The idea behind the book is to offer examples for readers to try out so they can find the best options for their particular circumstances.
If readers come away feeling better and saying 'Oh, thank goodness it's not just me who feels like that', then I'll be happy.

As the Daily Telegraph said when reviewing the book in its July Home Business Supplement, Judy Heminsley helps you assess just how suitable you are to the life of a home worker; explains how employees can negotiate a home working contract and targets her advice to all home workers from running a B&B to self-employed builders. In other words, her advice is as comprehensive as you are likely to find in a book. Again, as the Telegraph, points out: 'She should know, she has been a home worker for 20 years.'

This is a remarkable book, very readable yet full of well-researched facts. Easy to dip into but good enough to read right through. I enjoyed the chatty style, and felt the author must have had me in mind when she wrote it. Like the title suggests, it's a wise book and I thoroughly recommend it.
It can be tough to work from home but this book made me realise I was lucky to be able to make the choice and now I will get more out of it.

What an invaluable book! As a writer I didn't really think of myself as 'running a business from home'. But that's exactly what I do, and this book has been key in getting me to realise this and approach my work in a much more energised and productive way. It covers absolutely everything, including personality types, how to structure your time, deal with isolation, separate work life from home life, avoid procrastination... And what I found really useful, how to recognise when you need to take a break or get out more, and not beat yourself up about doing so! This book has really made me understand what I've been doing wrong, and right, and given me the confidence to be a good boss to myself and really appreciate the benefits of homeworking. It's written in a really engaging and friendly style, with great hints, tips and other resources, and interesting examples of real experiences from homeworkers doing a wide variety of jobs. A great new permanent addition to my must-have-to-hand books on the shelf just next to my desk!

Generally good, but I'm not astounded. I felt it could have spent less time on discredited pseudo psychological analysis (even Carl Jung distanced himself from his 1921 Psychological Types about four weeks after its publication) and more on practical checklists. It's been my observation that a lot of books in this genre don't quite hit the spot, either name checking madly or incapable of describing the prerequisites for successful self employment / entrepreneurialism.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a fellow home working friend and I am so glad I did! All the points are helpful and non-patronizing (so refreshing in this type of book) I felt that the author really knew what she was talking about. She thoroughly addressed the things that I struggle with on a daily basis and gave practical advice which I have been able to put into practice already.
I know I'll dip in and out of this book again and again and really use it as a 'bible' for my business.
Totally brilliant!

Having met the lovely author of this book, I was keen to see what 'Work from Home' was like. I was so impressed by it, I bought lots more for expat homeworkers here in France. It is our first "Business Book of the Month" and we will all be reading it and discussing it.

It is obvious this is written by someone who has set up her own business as it covers so many practical aspects, including those issues that aren't discussed by theorists, such as, how to find a workspace if you haven't the luxury of a spare room; what to do about feeling isolated or demotivated; how to get the support of your family.

My copy is well thumbed, full of highlighted passages and notes, and is constantly on my desk.

Easy to read, a practical handbook for any homeworker, or those contemplating throwing in the wage packet for the exciting entrepreneurial life!

Having started my own home based business earlier this year after many years of working in an office it was great to have a whole book filled with practical advice to help me work effectively in my new home office. Judy Heminsley is hugely experienced in this area and I have also attended some workshops run by her which were also filled with useful practical advice. With chapters on 'how to create my perfect workspace', 'can I be productive at home' and 'how do I separate home and work' this book covers all areas and is filled with Judy's own experience and many case studies and quotes from other experienced homeworkers. I highly recommend this book to anyone running a home based business.
