Product description

Review

"One of the greatest novels which our troubled age will produce" (Observer)

"A sparse, masculine, world-weary meditation on death, ideology and the savagery of war in general, and the Spanish civil war in particular" (Sunday Telegraph)

"For Whom the Bell Tolls allowed us to actually see the experience of an irregular struggle, from the political and military point of view...That book became a familiar part of my life. And we always went back to it, consulted it, to find inspiration" (Fidel Castro Observer)

"I read as a kid, of course, but it didn't get me like that till I read For Whom the Bell Tolls. I was very taken with that book. I still reread sections, though I'm now reading it not for the thrill of the story but for the technique and craft of it." (Gene Wilder Daily Mail)

"The best book Hemingway has written" (New York Times)

Book Description

'The best fictional report of the Spanish Civil War that we possess' Anthony Burgess

A masterpiece. Highly recommended if you're in any way interested in the Spanish Civil war, although it still seems very relevant today with events in Syria and "freedom fighters" going to fight over there.

This was my first foray into the world of Hemingway and did not disappoint. No problem with the style of writing and great to get a first hand snapshot of history. It was as much about human endeavour and aspirations as the war itself. Superbly written and well worth the complimentary and more detailed reviews.

I was disappointed. I bought this because I read that it was a best seller in 1941, the year of my birth. I tried very hard to read it but gave up at 45% because it was one long series of boring, repetitive and irrelevant conversations that continued for page after page after page and the plot seemed to go nowhere. I do not know if he ever blew up his bridge and to be honest I really do not care.
In spite of the graphic I am referring to "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and not "Animal Farm".

A truly enjoyable book which gives Hemingway's take on the Civil War in Spain in the 1930's. The prose used is somewhat controversial but not a problem once you get used to it and understand where he is coming from.

An excellent read. Some of the bits that were probably shocking when first published are now a little quaint which added to the experience. A wonderful depiction of the confusion of war.

A fine read, maybe a little monotonous in places.
