There are eight short stories (about 15-40 pages each), which are all funny and some are even slightly disgusting. Let us take the example of the excellent 'Cow Dung Custard' story. The story is in the first person, as many of Jennings' stories are, and this helps you to feel more immersed. Jennings always makes you feel for the characters in his books how he wants you to. But anyway, we have a boy, who has earned him the nickname 'Cow Dung Kid' because his dad is a farmer in the middle of the town. Dad is always mixing up strange concoctions of animal excrement, and the neighbours are complaining. But one day, his dad makes something much worse than anyone could've imagined. 'Cow Dung Custard' is on the loose and it's even killing off the flies it smells so bad! It makes the town smell foul for weeks! One day though, it may come in useful.
In some stories, you will find yourself laughing out loud, but sadly not as much in Unreal as in a couple of others of the 'Un' books. There are some good moments, but I won't spoil them. Often the shear ludicrousness of the whole plot will make you suddenly laugh. Such as in 'Without a Shirt' where the main character cannot finish a sentence without saying 'Without a Shirt'! Or is there a way he can? You'll have to read to find out.
Overall, a very good book, with a few minor flaws. I'd recommend it to you if you like a good book with a good few laughs. Jennings does a nice book for everyone once again.
