When you're used to Windows, or even Mac or on your mobile devices Android, sometimes it's nice for a change. And whilst this OS is now claiming its rightful place as a serious contender for not just an OS (Operating System), it actually combines the best of all three (Windows, Mac & Android). And it's true for the non technically minded, or even the slightly more than non technically minded, having this book will complete your education in what I found to be an easy on the eye to read, well illustrated, and certainly clear and concise descrambling of all that cumbersome trying to figure out with not much avail technical jargon. My home set up consists of 6 computers and Laptops and approximately 5 Android devices, Ubuntu works, I can pick off on any device straight where I left off, this OS goes a long way to bridging the gap to make that possible. A firm 10/10 for this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Necessary for New Ubunti Users 6 May 2014
By Pavanas Incusus - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
If you are new to the Ubunti O/S this is a necessary item. You should read it through to give you a feel and understanding of how things work. it will answer many basic questions. It will be helpful when you are setting up your first unit. Ubunti is based n the Linux kernel (a unix O/S) and is well supported by the Ubunti community. It is available both as an e-book and hard copy. The former is good unless there are serious problems ( i.e. you just installed/added something and it did not go as planned), then the latter is needed. It goes well with the basic rule in the unix community Read The Fine Manual. You will be glad you did.
5.0 out of 5 stars it's a very good purchase 26 Nov. 2014

I'm not too clear on Ubuntu but with another book I have on Ubuntu for non-geeks, I'm learning slowly. Without very much support out there, it's a very good purchase

I was hoping this book would help in such basic things as setting up a password, ect. It helped some but I still had to figure how to do it myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to get up-to-speed 5 Dec. 2012
By Fauna Sonden - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
My first experience in learning Ubuntu was The Ubuntu Desktop Beginner's Guide (Computer Beginner's Guides) Like the Moeller book, this one also has great screenshots to illustrate it, but they're easier to read with the book displayed on my laptop --the screenshots would be indecipherable on an e-reader. This volume would give me all that I needed to make the most of 12.04. It even gives options that, hopefully, you will never have to resort to. From installation, to the unthinkable, this book will give you what you need... including links to the many, many sites involved in customizing YOUR desktop.
