Product Description

Review

A great read and much more than just a fishing book. Alongside fishing tips, seasons and permits and how to get to each of the rivers, it takes the reader on a journey along 50 urban rivers in the UK. Full of interesting facts and anecdotes.I recommend that you add Trout in Dirty Places to your bookshelf. --Institute of Fisheries Management magazine, Summer 2012

Whether you are a keen fisherman looking for a new challenge, or a city-dweller interested in bringing nature to your doorstep, Theo Pike s trout fishing in the urban wilderness will you in the right direction. --Scottish Field, May 2012

It must be the most original, fascinating and eye-opening angling book I ve read in years. --Scottish Sun, April 2012

About the Author

Theo Pike is an angling, environmental and marketing writer. As Chairman of the Wandle Trust, he was instrumental in stating to restore south London s River Wandle to its historic status as a world-famous chalkstream fishery. This project s success inspired the Wild Trout Trust to establish a national Trout in the Town programme, with the Wandle as its flagship initiative. As a result of his experience in urban river restoration, Theo has done much work advising other groups on mobilising local support, motivating volunteers, best practice for river clean-ups, and promoting positive links between angling and conservation. He was awarded the Wild Trout Trust s Bernard Venables Award for services to wild trout conservation in 2008, and internationally honoured as a Sage Conservation Hero in 2009. He lives, with his wife Sally, in south London.

I enjoyed this book on so many levels. It's a fascinating guide to catching trout in the least likely of places - a real confirmation of the fact that you don't need to pay a fortune to go fishing for wild trout, and that if you put in the work you can find them living quite happily in the most urban of environments (as Theo proves by catching a 17 inch brown trout under runway 2 of Manchester airport...) The individual potted histories of the rivers featured are great stories in themselves - which more often than not involved their demise earlier in the 20th century, followed by hard work from dedicated fishermen and conservationists which has led to the state of improvement they're in today... A great read, a great fishing guidebook, and a great positive story for fish and fishing in general. Now where are my waders....?

What a great book. Full of really interesting information about rivers you would never consider as being good trout fisheries. A little local history on each location, and contact details for those who want to try out the spots for themselves.
I loved it.

I have had the privilege of fishing with Mr Pike on a number of occasions, though rather fewer than I would like, and perhaps rather more than he would have chosen. This book confirms his position as a modern day Plunkett Greene. He fishes with panache and to good purpose.

Great, great book. Good reading, inspirational both in terms of what can be done in positive environmental terms and of identifying places to fish when you're home or going for the odd business trip around the UK to what otherwise would be a bit of a dire couple of days. Remember to pack your fly rod as well as your suit next time you go off for yet another dull conference/business meeting and get a couple of hours urban fishing to make it all worthwhile. I'm sending a copy to fellow fly fishers in Tokyo who want to bring non-Carp species back to central Tokyo..... .

If you into fly fishing then this is a book for you. It shows that trout and grayling can be found very close to your home and you will not need to pay a penny for fishing on most urban fisheries. I enjoyed reading the practical advices on fishing as well as some interesting historical facts. Highly recommended!

Very interesting book about fishing for trout in the UK's cities. Who knew there was such good trout fishing in the middle of London, Manchester and Glasgow! Well worth a read and a fish afterwards.

This is a great book. I fly fish the Yorkshire Dales for brown trout and grayling, and am constantly on the search for new rivers to explore. Theo Pike has done a fantastic job of compiling a directory of urban and recovering stretches of water, often available at bargain basement prices on day tickets, that offer fishing that is the equal of any I have encountered on the wilder upland streams. The sections on the industrial history of the water courses are fascinating and informative, and each chapter closes with a few paragraphs on the logistics of access and permits. This book assumes that the reader already knows what they are doing in terms of tackle, flies and techniques, but there are other books that fill that gap. The book is very well produced and the photographs are many, numerous, and of superb quality. My only recommendation for a future edition would be to include a map of the UK showing where the towns and rivers are.
