This excellent translation breaks completely away from the "Bible English" epitomised by the King James version. It is written in easy to understand, modern English but unlike say the "Good News" version it brings out the full meaning without oversimplification. Orlinsky is one of the greatest ever Bible translators - he was also involved with two other major translations, the RSV and the NRSV. No Bible translation will ever satisfy everyone, and it would not be difficult to find a few places where I would have translated differently, but on balance this translation is the best available. (Of course, this volume only covers the Pentateuch, and even the complete version only covers the Old Testament.)

As a beginner to scripture I had to compare the Torah to the Old Testament of a Bible to appreciate just how well it has been translated. I wanted to start at the very beginning of my review of the three religions of the Book & this translation could not have provided a better introduction.

The Torah: The Five Books of Moses is an excellent translation in readable modern words of the first 5 books of the Bible.

Great to read and study from.

Bought this book because i am studying Torah, and this is such a handy size to carry around. Basically it is what it says it is,the five books of Moses, but as a used copy the condition it was in when i got it was mint. Absolutely impressed with it, and exactly what this student needs. Thanks again

I have just bought this edition of Torah and am very happy with it. The language is fairly simple, yet powerful enough to give the right impression, and so in my opinion it is even suitable for a foreigner. The font seems to be of a standard size and thus, despite the smallish format of the book, the text can be read easily. The book has also been with me on the road and I can confirm that it is handy. Unfortunately, since I have not owned any other edition of Torah, I cannot make any comparisons in that respect...

The only shortcoming to me personally is that the language could be a bit more powerful still, making the entire experience even more sublime.

However, taking everything into consideration, I would recommend this edition of Torah.

I like the way the scriptures read like a story instead of being subdivided so much as in various versions of the Bible. And I appreciate that the people who put this version of the Torah together, have taken as much care as possible to base it on the traditional Hebrew texts. The print is easy to read. Handy size to fit in a handbag. Well worth buying.

The printing is bad as the words are too close to the center of the book, many it hard to read the pages. Needs more space to read the pages better. Outside of this the printed words are a good size for reading.
