"The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. He is a craftsman of unquestionably first rank, a man who can bend language to his will. Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure."--"The New York Times Book Review"

From the Inside Flap

After two years at the Russian front, Ernst Graeber finally receives three weeks' leave. But since leaves have been canceled before, he decides not to write his parents, fearing he would just raise their hopes.
Then, when Graeber arrives home, he finds his house bombed to ruin and his parents nowhere in sight. Nobody knows if they are dead or alive. As his leave draws to a close, Graeber reaches out to Elisabeth, a childhood friend. Like him, she is imprisoned in a world she did not create. But in a time of war, love seems a world away. And sometimes, temporary comfort can lead to something unexpected and redeeming. . . .

Superb. Every bit as good as All Quiet on the Western Front. This is the third of his books that I've read, A Night in Lisbon the other. Remarque's writings deserve a much wider audience. Great though All Quiet... is, it's a pity that these other works are not more known.

Saw the film on tv more years ago than I wish to think about and therefore bought when found on Amazon. Moving evocation of horrific effect of war on "innocent" individuals with no personal axe to grind caught up in it. Now found film available, purchased, and will view asap.

I have previously read "All Quiet....." and "Three Comrades" by Remarque - both excellent books of WW1 and 30s Germany. "Time to love....." is of the same quality covering a German soldier's view of defeat in Russia. It covers events in a very human way exposing the grotesque effects of Nazism. The writng is sometimes very poetical and at other times quite simple. Throughout it is very atmospheric and you can imagine the feelings of soldiers at the Russian front and civilians in a bombed out German city. I recommend this as one of the best books of the 20th century.

A stunning and touching novel set on the Russian front and in a small German city as the tide turned against Germany. An excellent book with simple, but effective languge. The story tells us of how an experienced German soldier and his struggle for survival on the Russian front was briefley halted when he was allowed leave for the first time in two years, and how his small City was completely obliterated by the British bombing raids. A touching story that will show you how the Germans saw us in their eyes.
