Having lived around the areas he talks about in his own inimitable style of verse, Betjemans reflection of his early life transported me back there with the wonderful illustrations adding to it's charm..
If you're starting on your Sir John Betjeman discovery or just getting an interest in poetry then this is a must have

This is a nice book. I already have a first edition by Murray and I liked the idea of an illustrated version. I must admit I was a little disappointed with the illustrations. They are nice but they are really sketches rather than pictures.

A delightful and colourful 'must' for Sir John Betjeman disciples, especially if read whilst listening to JB himself read from it on his CD of the same name. His inflections and pronunciations add depth and coloiur to the experience. I strongly recommend that you buy both and be uplifted.

Great drawing to add to the wonderful poetry - it just adds to the delight of Betjeman's finest work - a real joy to own and constantly pick up and read

I could not put this book down and had read it through in less than a day. I have always enjoyed Betjeman's poetry, but had not read Summoned by Bells before. It is so evocative, poignant, and yes, amusing. The voice of the poet pervades this lovely verse. A must read for all lovers of poetry and particularly for those who may not have read Betjeman before. A wonderful introduction.

This book was in very good condition, which is what I wanted, as it is one to treasure. A delightful read. If you haven't already read this and you do enjoy biographies, you might look out for a copy of this. I particularly love the illustrations, so evocative of the time and era. Excellent service and delivery.

Evocative. Best when spiced with understated humour. Shows what an excellent vehicle blank verse can be.
