This book is no good if you want an army book with current rules as it is out of date.If you just want to read abit of history about the space marines and get some ideas about painting and colour schemes then this book is very decent and abit cheaper than the more recent editions.

A newer version of this rulebook has now been released, so this one is now out of date. I don't recommend it.

Though aged, the Space Marines codex is still competitive. The units are pretty solid all round, and forgiving for a first time player with almost every unit sporting excellent armor. Additionally, most models have pretty good firepower and melee ability, meaning if you use your army right, you can stay ahead of, or at least keep up with, your opponent in just about every phase of the game, assuming you choose your army right.

That said, they are also a bit dull in my opinion; lacking the gamble involved in playing Tyranids, Eldar, Dark Eldar and Orks. They are very dependable, and the cost of some excitement, but I have also played them off and on for over ten years so take that for what you will.
5.0 out of 5 stars Out of Date, but Still Packed with Information. 6 Nov. 2011

If you have an interest in the what rules were used for Space Marines from 2004-8, then this is the book for you. Also, if you are interested in Space Marines, Warhammer 40K or any combination thereof, you will also like this book. Finally, if you are a modeler and looking for excellent material for your own armies, such as painting guides, model design, banner designs, etc., etc., this book is a godsend. It's now available very cheap and is excellent source material.
