When I ordered this book I thought I'd be treated to the secrets of covert change work in what others would see as seemingly mundane conversations.
And to a degree the book delivers solid content based on NLP.
The problem is, the model, presented as a schematic in this book is one of the most unwieldy things I've ever seen. It's just too complicated and too detailed to be any use in helping someone using it to be able to access it unconscioulsy while simultaneously trying to be present in the conversation.
It seems, in an attempt to ensure no part of a communication is left out, the author felt it necessary to include everthing (big chunks and small chunks) so that by the end of the book, you feel even less confident of being able to do the stuff.
So in summary:
If you like talking about how these powerful patterns all may link together then you'll probably still love this book.
If you're actually interested in getting out there and using the patterns then this book will probably be more effective in confusing you.

This is not an introduction to NLP and as such I concur with the earlier review. However, if you've undertaken NLP training this comprehensive work brings much of the magic of NLP under one roof. The concepts that underpin the the conversation patterns are the foundations of NLP, hence the need for background. Once you have a firm grasp of such things as chunking, reframing, outcomes, complex equivalence etc. then the book comes alive. What you have here is priceless recipe for readily accessible language skills for challenging limiting beliefs. They offer a delightful starting point to draw on all your NLP skills. Your background in NLP would give you the skill to recognise limiting language. This set of conversation patterns gives you all the choice you need to start the ball rolling in moving towards empowering beliefs. It does take some reading and a little meta reflection to get it, but it is well worth it. Ideally located at NLP Master Practitioner level.

An excellent and well written book from the person who invented the Sleight of Mouth patterns. They are dealt with in a grouped and logical way. Robert also includes illustrative material from his seminars. This is not a book for beginners, but for readers with some knowledge of NLP.On reading this book, you will have an excellent understanding of the patterns and be in a position to apply and use them.

I've given this 4 stars, the content is probably worth 5 stars, but it is a bit of a nightmare to read.

If you are not familar with NLP then I would suggest reading something a little easier going, like one of the dummies books.

Reading this book is the best way to grasp the 14 patterns of this powerful NLP technique. Robert Dilts does not always make an easy read, but this book is easy to follow.

This book really brings NLP to life - it turns it from something theoretical into something you can experience in a practical way. The book will be somewhat more digestible if you already familiar with NLP, it would be helpful if you are already familiar with the basics of sleight of mouth, I would recommend Doug O'briens 2 hour audio program to get you up to speed (google it)or his ebook

This book goes into the deeper theoretical side of language/framing and it has lots of easy to do exercises to show how to practically apply the information.

This book is a must read if you are somebody who has struggled to apply NLP to real life situations, its the meat and potatoes of NLP all under one roof. The paradigm shifts in the book are addictive!

I recommend that you create a word documment on your computer with a template with all the patterns on for you to fill in the gaps. After re framing lots of your own limiting beliefs you will start to become more skilled in the patterns (your own mental well being will improve as well). After several months of doing a few a week you will be a real expert and will have a lot more flexibility in your persuasion skills and shifting your own thinking patterns.

The book is an excellent work of reference for when you are stuck trying to come up with an effective reframing pattern. The other similar book on this subject that I would recommend is Mindlines by Michael Hall. Both books are essential reading on the subject

Sleight of Mouth works with language patterns and, most particularly, with spoken language patterns. Meanwhile, Robert Dilts is a sublime practitioner of his own techniques mostly because of his own personal warmth and his direct and uncomplicated interactions with people. This book, therefore, is to Dilts’ practice of NLP as any recipe book is to the practice of cooking, serving and eating delicious food. Certainly, the recipe is there, and all of the ingredients are described, but there is nothing of the flavour, the aroma, the atmosphere or the human vitality that lie at the heart of these skills. When sleight of mouth works best, it is because the internal logic of the subject’s statements are working against their own self interest, and I have seen and heard Robert Dilts respond to such statements by the inverting the logic to operate FOR the subjects self-interest and returning it as a question (an offering) to the subject. What is striking about such an interaction is not so much the linguistic skill of the man (which is impressive) but his compassion; his ability to recognise, in a very short sentence, how someone can be helped to help themselves. You don’t find that in the book.
