About the Author
Laura Landon taught high school for ten years before leaving the classroom to open her own ice-cream shop. As much as she loved serving up sundaes and malts from behind the counter, she closed up shop after penning her first novel. Now she spends nearly every waking minute writing, guiding her heroes and heroines to happily ever after. She is the author of more than a dozen historical novels, and her books are enjoyed by readers around the world. She lives with her family in the rural Midwest, where she devotes what free time she has to volunteering in her community.

Simon's in a bit of a fix himself. His father and avaricious stepmother managed to pretty much spend his inheritance and he has almost nothing left. His father also died under rather suspicious circumstances and many still believe Simon to be the culprit. He's also set on revenge against Jessica's stepbrother....
A marriage of convenience to each other will save the remaining Northcote estates and protect Jessica from her stepbrother. Of course, that is just the beginning of the story....
Overall, and enjoyable well-written read with an element of danger, so not so much a 'fluffy' sort of story. A few things could have been a little better I thought: on his first entrance, simon is a social pariah, women faint etc. and there are whispers everywhere that he murdered his father. Next thing we see, he's almost totally accepted and everyone wants to be his friend. Jessica does sometimes seem to make her deafness an excuse for just about everything; not an easy condition, especially at those times, but sometimes it's a bit over done. She is also almost too ready to believe everything that she reads other people saying. If anything, the final section of the book was a little too rushed, I thought, so lost a bit of tension. Overall though, an enjoyable book.
Simon Westland, Earl of Northcote is a bankrupt social outcast still whispered to be responsible for the death of his father. He needs to find a rich wife, and soon, to keep him from losing everything.
Marrying each other was convenient, falling in love with each other is either a big problem - or the best thing that could ever happen to them.
I have only recently been introduced to Laura Landon novels and this one seems to fit the mould of the others I have read. It's fun, romantic and interesting but doesn't have the sparkle of some of the big names of historical romance.
In this book, Simon and Jessica are thrown together by necessity but soon find themselves tied together by feelings and ultimately love. With secrets on both sides, there's plenty of interest to keep the pace of this book moving along.
With that said, there were a few things that stopped this getting 5 stars. There were a few anachronisms and Americanisms dotted throughout the text which always jar and pull you from the story. There were also a couple of issues regarding Jessica's deafness as well as confusion over just how much of a social outcast Simon was - but these are minor things in what was, overall, an enjoyable read with likeable characters and plot. 4 stars.
Jessica Stanton has secrets. One she is deaf and secondly she is the mysterious designer of fashionable clothes. She finds out that her wicked step-brother Colin Tanhill didn't die many years ago and is now coming back to England from India to have the courts condemn her as an idiot so he can install her into an asylum and so claim her inheritance which she will receive in a few days when she turns 25. Her only hope is to find a husband. Enter Lord of Northcote, Simon Westland. He has need of a rich wife so that he can rebuild his inheritance which his father squandered and lost through gambling. Jess calls at his home and propositions Simon to marry her but he thinks he is being set up by friends and refuses. The following day he finds out that she was being genuine. They marry. Simon keeps his secrets from Jess especially when he finds out who her step-brother is. An old enemy and he wants to have revenge. But who will win? Recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good book.
