This is the story of the Kriegsmarine raider "Atlantis", as told by the ship's first officer Mohr, from diaries he kept aboard the Atlantis. It seems there are other books covering this raider's story in particular, i enjoyed immensely this one though. It's the type of book you can't put down once you start reading it, written beautifully. If you don't know the story of the Atlantis (ship 16), it was the longest serving and most successful commerce raider of the Kriegsmarine, sinking 22 ships during its 602 days journey at sea, but what strikes you most is the humanity of the crew and its captain, Bernharnd Rogge, in the way the victims were treated. You can't avoid feeling connected to the crew, almost being a member of the crew, Mohr puts you right in the middle of the action. Beautiful story, beautifully written, and although know i already know the story of the Atlantis, at least from Mohr's point of view, i will no doubt read the other accounts - hopefully they'll be as enjoyable as this one. Worth 5 stars. My only regret, i couldn't find a hardcover version. If you already read the other accounts, perhaps it's time to try reading Mohr's view of the events. Highly recommended book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the last great Ocean adventures 30 July 2014
By Timothy B. Lynch - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
One of the last great Ocean adventures. Today satellites assure the mariner that he can not hide in the vast empty oceans of the World. Then it was different, and the Commerce Raider Atlantis story is one of courage, guile, stealth and humanity at war on the world's oceans. Led by a Master Mariner the ship and its crew accomplished their mission. The Master and Crew also returned home safely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very informative true story. 10 Mar. 2013

Very informative and interesting for someone who lived in the WWII era and interested in shipwrecks.
Was a good reference book since I have written a true story of my parents in a shipwreck with my mother 4 months pregnant with me during the WWII. In 1940.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! A must read for any WWII fan. 19 Aug. 2009
By Ivan Klein-Vidal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book, more like an account, was amazing. Eye-opening. It goes against what majority of people feel about German WWII service men. It shows that they are humans, they feel pain. As a WWII naval history buff, I have read many accounts/stories from both sides, but this one is set appart.

GREAT READ! A MUST HAVE!

A fascinating and in-depth account of the life, and eventual demise, of one of the most famous German auxiliary cruisers.
