An absolute steal at this price for such a big book (about 10"x9").
Everything you ever wanted to know about the 50's American obsession with South Seas paraphernalia and exotica. Don't buy it if you're after an actual anthropological study of Polynesian culture; this is kitsch pop culture at it's best/worst (delete as applicable). Discover lost treasures such as the Tiki Hibachi canape warmer (including asbestos table pad). Unearth the sophisticated forgotten delights of Tiki bowling lanes. And revive the long lost art of Tiki cocktail mixing whilst gazing at a topless Polynesian princess.
Packed with photos and illustrations; this book has it all. Thanks to this mighty book I was inspired to carve my very own Easter Island head. From a breeze block. Genuine class.
One for fans of low-brow art and culture or, if you think you're a bit above all that, a postmodern assault on taste.
Fantastic.

The Book of Tiki has been in the pipeline for many years, and it's taken the German publishing giant Taschen to have the foresight to publish it. The book itself is amazing. Sven Kirsten has accumulated many photographs, menus, mugs, pictures, etc., leading to a sumptiously illustrated book that's a pleasure just to leaf through at random. It manages to give an excellent account of the rise and fall of the Tiki fashion in the US, while filling us in on the movers and shakers in Tikiland. All in all, this definitive book is well worth the wait!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book, very lame seller. 23 Jan. 2017

DO NOT BUY FROM >>> NORTH LAMAR BOOKS <<<

I received this book today.

The description never indicated a razor slice in the cover, nor did it state anything about what looks like coffee spilled on this book.

I would have preferred a crayola hand drawn picture of a monkey humping a football; at least I would have laughed.

I am very disappointed.

I will not ever buy from North Lamar Books, again.

Aside from the unmentioned condition of this particular book, this book is awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars PREPARE FOR TIKI OVERLOAD! 4 Sept. 2015

No kidding! TIKI SENSORY OVERLOAD! I'm a "johnny come lately" on this book, since it's outa print, and paid a hefty premium for it on marketplace, but "WOW!" I am a tiki fan and graphic artist and had been reading the reviews and kept looking at the ones for sale and finally decided to jump-in and get it. Prepare yourself, you have no idea what you are in for! The few pics shown on amazon are not the best representation of what's inside the book. There are tiki's, tiki's and more tiki's. Tiki hotels, motels, restraunts, bars, apartments, gardens, nik-naks, ephemera, a whole world! It was well worth the price!

If you love Tiki, Mid Century commentaries or Pop Culture, Buy This!
For Tiki Lovers: its your Bible, for Mid Century connesuers: its a guidebook, for Pop Culture lovers: this is one of the biggest and longest lasting trends that has grown worldwide and you owe it to yourself to seek it out in debth.

This book has great pictures, wonderful, accurate information, and puts you right in the middle of the era as it was, not totally romanticized.

If you have young children, you may want to censor a few pictures, as they show some nudity.

When you buy this out of print, wonderfully Tiki text, also buy a Matin Denny Album Best of or Ultra LoungeBachelor Pad Royale: Ultra Lounge 4 or Don HoGreatest Hits, then go find a cofy spot under some swaying palm trees or in a corner of your favorite lounge and read away.
