... I don't normally write reviews but I am just enjoying this read so much, and knowing that it is a recent release, I felt the urge to leave a review. I am from the Mourne Mountain area where the author is located, and where much of the training of his search dogs takes place, but the description of the locations really brings it to life.
I started to read the book one night, and ended up very sleep deprived the next day as I couldn't put it down! An absolutely fascinating, really interesting, read. It is a real eye-opener into the work and dedication that people such as Neil and others, put into helping people who need it. It is interesting to see how some things that we now take for granted were thought up and created by them. One vivid story in the book is that of Neil and his dog Pepper helping out in the search after the Lockerbie bombing. You realise that the people who go in to do this work, are just normal people, who have the courage to help others.
If you are interested in the outdoors, or you are a dog lover, this book is a must! It has also given me great inspiration to keep training my dog on even the most simple things, as it is amazing what some dogs are capable of!
Neil Powell tells a wonderful story that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. With great humilty and humour, he gives the reader an insight into the world of a search and rescue dog handler and his dogs. Above all, he conveys the great love he has for all his dogs (past and present) and one can only marvel at the amazing skills of Neil and his dogs. This is one of those must read books and it's an inspirational story. Neil and his dogs are truly unsung heroes!
Meeting him again gave the book even more reality. As i started to read it i realized i'd been hooked and resented the fact i'd have to give it as a present before long, but reluctantly did so.Luckily for me it was for my wife so i got back into it again on Christmas day,for somone who isn't a reader this book held me page for page and is now having the same effect on my wife.
A truly great read and especially if you've got GSD's.Look forward to the next one or maybe a series of short film.
