Product Description

Review

A miniature masterpiece. --Stephen Fry

Astonishingly accurate, quite brilliant! --David Starkey

Extraordinarily evocative to a child's imagination. --Lady Antonia Fraser

Book Description

This history of Scotland from the earliest times is, in the words of H E Marshall herself, a story 'woven with the golden threads of romance and glittering with the rubies and sapphires of Fairyland.'

My father bought me this book (and much of the H.E. Marshall series) when I was a child and I absolutely loved them. I am revisiting this book in particular as an English language teaching aid because of how clearly it tells so many stories. It is written in wonderfully simple language yet it never patronises. A very charming book indeed! Highly recommended!

This is a superb sweep through the long and fascinating history of Scotland without any obvious party political spin.

It is clearly and beautifully written for young readers but its scope is a first rate aide-memoire for older readers whose memory may have grown hazy with time.

It is a matter of great regret that the writer is no longer with us to keep updating it

I read h e Marshall' s "our island story" a long time ago and enjoyed it so I decided to try this book. It is a good read and introduction to the subject but does have a decided Victorian attitude to Britain and the empire but I did enjoy it and can recommend it. But you will probably want to follow it up by reading a more up to date work such as the book by Neil Oliver. Recommended

Found the original book in a boot sale, then discovered it had been made into an ebook. It's a fantastic read, as thrilling now as it would have been to boys and girls back in the early 1900's when first written. Reads well and to the point.
