Having said that, I'd make the same review if I didn't know him.
The story is fantastic and thought provoking. It's an insight into a different world, with different morals and thought processes, and a realistic assessment of a number of issues with prisons, the legal system, and rehabilitation, and what it takes to be truly rehabilitated. The story of his mental strength and drive is fantastic, and shows that given the wrong direction, a goal directed mindset can take one into some truly terrible places.
However, it can also take one into some positive places, as it now has taken John.
From cover to cover, I did not want to stop. I'm looking forward to seeing the next chapters in John's life.
After hearing John's interview on the Marathon Talk podcast I ordered the book. What a gripping and inspiring read. I would have finished the book in 24 hours if I hadn't had to go to work. John comes across as an intelligent, articulate and dedicated person. I highly recommend this book. Great to see that even with the start in life he had he turned his life around. Everyone deserves a second chance and I truly hope John does crack that elite sportsman role - I'm sure he will.
