'The book is excellent for its content, variety, and the masterful way in which Cook handles the Portuguese verbal system.' --The Modern Language Journal, USA
This is a volume that will prove to be a valuable tool for teachers and students alike, especially as many learners of Portuguese nowadays lack the necessary grammatical background and terminology to cope with a language far more inflected than English. --Ellipsis, US

It includes detailed explanations of how and where to use each type of verb and plenty of example sentences to show you how they're really used in everyday speech and writing.
Another plus point is that it explains many informal ways of speaking: for example, the use of 'a gente' and the second person singular for 'we' and how the past imperfect can be used in place of the conditional. Understanding these are essential if you want to really understand Portuguese, and not just an idealised textbook version of it.
It gives clear guidance on verb tenses, uses, formation and variations.
Short exercises at the end of each 'chapter' help you by testing yourself.
Very easy to pick up and put down in short bursts (great if you're busy, like me and most of us!) and not too heavy that you couldn't spend a good period of time studying with it!
Has been invaluable in my Portuguese education and a great companion to the 501 verbs book!
An ideal companion to the 501 Portuguese Verbs (Barron's 501 Portuguese Verbs) which I purchased along side it. Instead of one book trying to be a jack-of-all-trades, this book (with the other I just mentioned) are masters of their subject and are essential studying for students - not for just casual reading!
If you want to progress beyond tourist-speak then spending a few dozen hours studying this book will work wonders for your competency (first hand experience!).
Well pleased with it.
