Review

Praise for The Perfume Collector:

‘This evocative novel spins you back a few decades to the grace and elegance of the ‘20s and ‘50s’ GLAMOUR

‘A mesmerising novel of passion and scent’ – WOMAN AND HOME

‘The joy in Tessaro’s books, however, is her knack for describing glamour. She leaves readers greedy for satin and lace, for angular cocktail dresses and complex scents spilling from beautiful bottles. It’s a voluptuous and desirable world to drop into, but her characters have enough depth and moral ambiguity to lift this above most’ EMERALD STREET

Praise for The Debutante:

'It's an elegant and glamorous plot …which means lots of mouth-watering descriptions of decaying stately homes by the sea'
Daily Mail

‘The latest from the author of bestseller Elegance. New Yorker Cate immerses herself in the mystery of the Mitford-esque 1920’s London debutante’
Red

‘A shoebox filled with mementoes sets artist Cate on a hunt for the truth behind the disappearance of a dazzling 1920’s ‘it’ girl in Kathleen Tessaro’s The Debutante’
Good Housekeeping

‘Tessaro gets her story-weaving wand out with a gloriously rich story of past and present love’
InStyle

‘Reading The Debutante was the most delicious treat. Engrossing, romantic, wise and witty – the perfect read. I could not put it down’
Gillian Greenwood, author of Satisfaction and The Ghost Lover

From the Back Cover

London, 1955: Grace Monroe is a fortunate young woman. Despite her sheltered upbringing in Oxford, her recent marriage has thrust her into the heart of London's most refined and ambitious social circles. However, playing the role of the sophisticated socialite her husband would like her to be doesn't come easily to her--and perhaps never will.

Then one evening a letter arrives from France that will change everything. Grace has received an inheritance from a mysterious benefactor, Eva d'Orsey, whom she's never met.

So begins a search that takes Grace to a long-abandoned perfume shop on Paris's Left Bank, where she discovers the seductive world of perfumers and their muses, and a surprising love story. Told by invoking the three distinctive perfumes she inspired, Eva d'Orsey's story weaves through the decades, from 1920s New York to Monte Carlo, Paris, and London.

But these three perfumes hold secrets. And as Eva's past and Grace's future intersect, Grace must choose between the life she thinks she should live and the person she is truly meant to be.

The cover of The Perfume Collector is beautiful! I was ever so excited about reading this. I admit, I have never read a novel by Kathleen Tessaro before but I had a feeling that this was my type of book, as I was so captured by the description on the back, and I am a fan of books in this genre.

Grace Munroe is a newly-wed who feels unfulfilled and yearns for more from life. One day, Grace recieves a letter telling her that she is the chief beneficiary in the will of a Mrs Eva d'Orsey. The only problem is that Grace has never heard of Eva, and has no idea why she has inherited from her. Keen to find out more about Eva and who she is, Grace travels to Paris in search of Eva's story on a journey of discovery...

I LOVED The Perfume Collector, I spent every moment that I could buried in this book, devouring every page. I was even staying up late at night to finish chapters as the take was so gripping that I didn't want to be parted from it.

Kathleen Tessaro drew me in from the very beginning and I became immersed in the world that Kathleen had laid out before me. The settings in particular were beautifully written. The descriptions were so vivid and well written that I felt as though I was transported to Paris with Grace, making this important journey and discoveries with her. Kathleen captures the essence of Paris and the other settings perfectly, and creates an atmosphere that makes the story jump from the pages.

The Perfume Collector is split between Grace and Eva's story. There are chapters from Eva's life, telling her story, where she came from, and what happened to her in her life. We are transported back to the 1920′s as we see Eva as a young girl starting work in a hotel.

I chose this book based on your recommendation. The fact that I adore perfume and collect perfume bottles made it even more attractive. Loved the story and two other people who have read the book loved it too. Wonderful read. Totally recommended.

The Perfume Collector follows the story of Grace on her journey to find information about Eva D'Orsey who has named Grace as chief beneficiary in her will, problem is Grace has never heard of the woman and she feels uneasy about taking what has been left to her without trying to find out who this woman is what what connection they share.

I was intrigued by the story line and I enjoyed taking the journey with Grace as she slowly began to unravel Eva's past. The story alternates between Grace;s story to Eva's story back in the 1920's so we really get to know each of the characters well and I enjoyed reading from both women's perspective they were both as equally good. I found myself picking this book up any time I could snatch an odd moment at work just because I needed to see what part of the mystery was uncovered next.

The detailed writing surrounding the perfume making and also the descriptive writing when talking describing the scents clearly showed that the author had done her research and her writing style just felt so effortless. The author also managed to bring a topic that has never been of any interest to me but has managed to open up my mind to the skills and hard work behind the perfume business and it was nice to have a topic that has never come up in a book in such detail that I have read before.

The author has created a delicate and elegant storyline about a woman on her journey of self discovery. I loved this book from start to finish so much so I will be picking up a copy of her previous book Elegance after this book has won me over!

Leaving London Grace goes in search of the truth, as she learns about Eva she starts to discover more about herself, causing her to look at her life as a trophy wife in a different way.

The story flits between 1950's life with Grace and 1920's life with Eva, as we learn who the women are we find ourselves on a journey of discovery.
After Grace's initial meeting with the solicitors, she is still none the wiser as to who Eva is and why she has left Grace an inheritance.
So Grace goes in search of answers which lead her to a perfume shop and three fragrances, It's time for Grace to discover who Eva was.

'The Perfume Collector' is a moving story, that enticed me within the first page. I found both Eva and Grace to be fascinating women and I loved how the story was told through smells.
There is an abundance of characters that come in and out of Eva's life and although the majority of them aren't pleasant they help to tell the story of who she was.

2013 is bringing us some amazing books and 'The Perfume Collector' is definitely up there, I cannot recommend it enough.

A thought provoking story of a 1950's woman expected to perform within her role. On finding she is an heiress to an estate, she sets out to discover her true identity and in doing so unwittingly sets herself free from her bondage. The book explores in great detail the parallel worlds of sexual exploitation, the artistry of creating perfume, and the memories that this evokes. A thoroughly good read.
