The book takes you through how to create an Oversubscribed business in a step by step fashion, using examples and 7 activities. I wrote out and completed the 7 activities across 6 pages of a notebook. After completing the activities I'm a little blow away by the value these simple activities and questions have added to my way of thinking about my business. And they're totally actionable.
While I don't agree with everything that Oversubsribed talks about, and I would have liked more concrete examples of everyday oversubscribed business in case study format (there are examples of oversubscribed businesses - just not that many that i could relate to as a sole trader). That being said the value of this book has been IMMENSE to my way of thinking about my business and my customers. I'm really excited about taking away the lessons from Oversubscribed and applying them to my own business and helping me transform my business into a Campaign Driven Enterprise Which in my opinion is the litmus test of an influential business book.
Wish me luck!
However I stuck with it and realised the author was simply setting the ground and his credentials for the rest of the book. In my opinion this was not necessary and a little more humility in the introduction would have been welcome.
I found it an easy read - it flowed well and ideas were well set out in helpful sections.
The ideas will make you think. Some are common sense but we sometimes need to be reminded of the best way of doing things. There are plenty of ideas you can actually put into practice.
If you have an expensive product/service to sell this is the book for you. Its not stack them high & sell them cheap economics - here we are dealing with selling scarcity and uniqueness at a premium price.
I found it useful and intend to put the ideas into practice.
I found it inspiring and motivating. I do admit that it does not cover details but I also think that it would not be inspirational if it was because most details would not relate to my context. Having a general idea and a few simple examples was more than enough to engage imagination and think how I could implement this strategy.
I particularly liked chapters about being different, sharing your philosophy and putting the emphasis on remarkable delivery. Campaign driven enterprise was great to read but I was not able to draft the entire campaign in my head and will certainly need to speak to someone with a bit more experience - I think it will be easier for those who's businesses are already running and have got a fair understanding of their market behaviours. The part about the team building was more of a reminder of what roles need to be in place but yet again I see this as a general rule.
All in all I think it is an interesting piece of reading that is more of a guide that shows direction rather than giving you ready made solutions - and for that I really value this book a lot. It certainly highlighted elements that I have not yet considered - like timing of campaigns and "oversubscription" safety margins.
I think that if you like me at the moment are considering how to get your new product out there - it is a great food for thought.
1. Principles for becoming oversubscribed
2. The campaign driven enterprise method
3. You, your team and the crazy times.
Following each step and applying them to your business can help you to see where you can make changes in your own business. I was looking at it from the perspective of an author and it has certainly helped clarify my ideas and strategy.
If you run a business of any size then I would highly recommend this book.
Oversubscribed is easy and quick to read and nicely put together. I'm still trying to find ways to integrate it to my web app, but I like its philosophies and perspectives. In short, if people talk about you in a positive way, your marketing budget reduces to zero. A good book for anyone who wants to stand out from the crowd
