“Joomla! is about allowing ordinary people to do extraordinary things, and that is exactly what the authors of this book do for its readers. … I present this book for your pleasure. It begins with how we began and takes you on a journey through which you can be empowered to reach the world.”

I've been working with Joomla! for 2 years on some small community sites, and bought this more of a test of my kindle than anything else. However, I was really surprised and delighted the book was IMHO very good. Yes, it covers 1.5 and 1.6 but it has a number of website scenarios (business, education etc..) with appropriate suggested extensions which are really helpful. Also, I liked the interviews with key people in the J! community, and it has put some thoughts in my mind that maybe I could contribute something back to this amazing community project. Overall I like it. (By the way by the paper edition not the kindle edition, the pictures in the kindle edition are poor)

I'm back on Amazon again looking for another book on Joomla! after almost giving up with this...

The information is there, but I'm finding it hard to read.

The illustrations appear to be paragraphs after the text that describes them and the layout is just generally poor. I'm also finding key information tend to be hidden at the end of sentances.

Saying all that I've not managed to read it all, so it may improve after Chapter 4....

However, so far my summary would be, it is a book that needs to be read very carefully (almost studied) and is not something that can be easily dipped into (especially for the inexperienced developer)

if your looking for info on joomla 1.6 I dont think this is the book. The first 225 pages refer to joomla 1.5 then from 225-236 (chapter 11) relates to joomla 1.6 and 1.5.

At the time of writing, I am considering whether to use Joomla! as our in-house CMS for external website and possibly intranet for a medium size public sector organisation. I hadn't used Joomla before and so was looking for a good introduction to it, as ploughing through a lot of the online material can be time consuming and it is of variable quality. I spotted this book and thought that it would be a good introduction to the system.

Other reviewers have highlighted that this is really a book for people who don't know much about building websites or web management and who are considering Joomla! for their site build. I would agree. It is quite useful at giving you a broad overview of the concepts in Joomla! such as articles, categories, extensions, menu manager and so on - but the majority of the book deals with how to build a site, covering marketing, principles of web design, layout etc. None of which is specific to Joomla!, although the slant here is obviously using Joomla! as your CMS.

So while it has a fairly useful, broad overview of how Joomla! works, if you are a relatively experienced web practitioner, you won't need quite a lot of this book, and will be able to find most of what you need elsewhere.
