Most of the first few releases of the Fighting Fantasy series achieved a semi-legendary status amongst fans and 'City of Thieves' was no exception. For a long time it was the only FF adventure to fully immerse itself in a realistic city environment. Although the idea of revisiting Port Blacksand must have been tempting to many, 'Midnight Rogue' fails to deliver. We may be told that the adventure takes place in the infamous City of Thieves but the story simply doesn't convey this. The atmospheric claustrophobia of a port town riddled with corruption, crime and danger is completely missing. It feels like another place and thus the main selling point of this book, to revisit the classic Port Blacksand, is lost.

Whereas an accomplished FF adventure offers a variety of interesting and involving villains and monsters everything you seem to encounter in Midnight Rogue is a bit flat.

The adventure also lacks challenge. You should be able to complete it on one of your first attempts, if not the first. At the risk of spoilers it must also be said that the resolution is deeply unsatisfying. I had little sense of achievement in completing it.

If you loved 'City of Thieves' don't buy this expecting a sequel or anything similar. This is a very mediocre and uninspiring adventure that just happens to take place in the same city. If you want to enjoy more city based adventures try 'Moon Runner' or 'Master of Chaos'.
