Review

Ghada Karmi's storytelling eloquence is celebrated. Now the sheer power and sense of her analysis throws down a challenge to those who claim the 'problem' of Israel and Palestine cannot be solved. She shows it can. (John Pilger)

The demise of the  two-state solution makes Ghada Karmi's work a compelling read. Her book is well-written and extraordinarily honest. Her bold vision of a single egalitarian  state for Palestinians and Israelis is the only way to break the current log jam and bring an end to Apartheid Israel (Dr Nur Masalha, Reader in Religion and Politics, Director of the Centre for Religion and  History and of the Holy Land Research Project, St Mary's University College, University of Surrey)

Ghada Karmi's direct and incisive prose is a welcome contribution to a field overburdened. ... The book introduces in the most convincing manner the merit of the one state solution as a settlement that would benefit all concerned: the Palestinians wherever they are, the Israelis and the Middle East as a whole. (Ilan Pappe, author of A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples)

Two rabbis visited Palestine in 1897 to examine its suitablity as a Jewish state and observed that the land was like a bride 'beautiful but married to another man'. These days the conflict ... has implications for the whole world. Karmi, one of our most renowned commentators on the Isreali-Palestinian conflict, has some startling ideas and conclusions in this fascinating book. (Hampstead and Highgate Express)

The impact of Zionism on the Middle East and the Arabs is discussed, together with reasons for the unstinting support for the Zionist project by the West. The subsequent extended review of all the attempts at finding a peace for the region makes fascinating reading given the detail that Ghada Karmi brings to the story. The ultimate failure of the so-called 'Two State' solution advocated by the West is cogently argued, as is the realisation that the formation of a single Israeli/Palestinian state is the only possible route to the survival of these two peoples in this disputed territory.
This most important book should be required reading for people in this country who have been subject to a diet of ignorance and bias by the BBC and a number of British newspapers, never more so than now.
Buyers should be aware that this book betrays its origin as an extended essay and is frequently repetitive and too long. It assumes some knowledge of the foundation of Israel and does not present a formal history of the country; for this I would choose the superior books of the historian Ilan Pappe.

Dr Karmi is a Palestinian who was a victim of the ethnic cleansing, the Nakba, of 1948. Her account of the history and plight of Palestine is abundantly researched and documented. It is written in a clear and readable style. As well as a history with perceptive analysis, Dr Karmi offers what is, in my view, the only feasible and just solution. That is, a single democratic state with implementation of the Palestinian Right of Return.

I think this book is essential reading for anyone interested in Palestine and Israel. An excellent work.

This book provides a great analysis on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, its impact on other Arab countries, the peace process and the factors which contribute to the bad situation nowadays, it talks about the endless US support to Israel, the reasons and background of this support and the Arab countries and its stand in this conflict. At the end of the book, Karmi describes the possible solutions to the conflict: two states solution and the one state solution. She describes each of them, the challenges to be faced with both, the advantages and disadvantages of both, and at last she states her own personal opinion in the solution, which ends to be the one state solution. A must read book to understand the depth of the cause.
