René Magritte, 1898-1967, is one of the artists whose Surrealist works are readily identified, appeal to many of the general public and influenced the later Pop Art and Conceptual Art movements. Within an overall Surrealist context he took a variety of incongruous objects and juxtaposed them in ‘strangely visionary and intellectually confounding ways.’ This book represents the catalogue to an exhibition that was held at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, in 1999-2000.

The catalogue contains 72 works that range chronologically from 1926 [“The Desert Catapult”, “The Magician’s Accomplices”, “The Wreckage of the Dark”, “The Denizens of the River” and “The Birth of the Idol”] to 1961 [“The Dominion of Light” and “The Natural Graces”].

The Louisiana Gallery was founded in 1958 by Knud W. Jensen who remained its Director until 1995. He intended it to be a home for modern Danish art. Shortly thereafter, he broadened its focus course Louisiana has now become became an international museum with many internationally renowned works. It is situated on the shore of the Øresund Sound in Humlebæk, 35 km north of Copenhagen and looking across the sea to Sweden. This location, together with its permanent collection and regular exhibitions, makes this one of the most impressive smaller art museums in Europe and well worth a visit at any time of the year.

The Preface was written by Steingrim Laursen, who died in 2007 at the age of 75, and who was the Director of the Louisiana Gallery between 1998-2000. An essay ‘The Visible Secret of René Magritte, illustrated with 14 colour and b/w illustrations, was written by Siegfried Gohr and translated by John William Gabriel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this not a pipe? 7 April 2007
By Reich Claude - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
The catalogue for a comprehensive exhibition at the Jeu de Paume in Paris held in 2003, this book is a very good, well-documented, well-illustrated study of this ubiquitous Belgian artist who has inspired so many contemporary artists and publicists. There is quite a lot of material available on Magritte and I would say this one is one of the safest bets. Daniel Abadie is a leading French modern art historian and curator and his signature is a token of quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing 18 Oct. 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book on Margritte includes fabulous images and great explanations and references to Magritte's life. I purchased this book in Dutch in Europe, for about four times the price listed here. This is an absolute bargain, and I sincerely regret not having purchased it from Amazon, although I greatly enjoyed having purchased it overall. Any Magritte fan cannot miss this book! Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars More for your money 21 May 2001
By Jason Dickman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
As the description above states, this book contains 400 illustrations covering Magritte's entire career. I found that after reading "The Essential Magritte," this was a perfect continuation in my introduction to this man's work. The price is also unbeatable, considering what some art books go for these days. Well written and illustrated, this book was a wonderful find.
