The story is a continuation from the first book, so although it can be read as standalone, I'd recommend starting at the beginning. It is another fast moving adventure, full of snappy dialogue, black humour and original characters. Fortunately (for my taste at least) the blossoming romance between Kate and Curran (the beast lord) is not allowed to dominate the story and she stays well away from the tedious soft porn of many other books occupying the genre.
So why only four stars? Well, Ilona Andrews has muddled up her mythology, obviously believing Ireland has the monopoly on anything "celtic"; Taliesin, Merlin, Bran etc were Welsh, not Irish, a glaring mistake.
Again you get to find out more about the heroin Kate while the 'romance' aspect with Curran was not rushed and for this I was grateful as it seems that Miss Andrews is building as somewhat more believable relationship between the characters, rather than jumping right in 3 pages into the book.
I can't wait for the next installment
I couldn't put it down and stayed up until 2am in the morning to finish it, I love the development of the characters and we get to see a different side of Kate, the scene when curran is pumping weights is hilarious, the storytelling is superb and it seemed longer than 272 pages
This is one of the best fantasy books that i've read for a long time and if there's one book you buy this year it should be this, I would definitely recommend Magic Bites aswell,
I read Magic Bites at the end of last year so I only had a few months to wait for Magic Burns but now I have to wait another year, I could have read another 300 pages and it wouldn't be enough,
And we will have to wait a while longer I'm afraid because it doesn't happen in this book although there is definite progress. And besides, the anticipation is delicious! At the very least in this book, they have stopped trying to kill each other (mostly) and even managed to have one whole civil conversation. He also handed her food, which as a lion shifter, clearly declares a romantic interest so we will have to wait and see what Kate thinks about this once she figures it out.
One of my absolute favourite Kate and Curran scenes in this one was was the weightlifting encouragement scene "Make that weight your bitch!" Loved it!
Aside from Kate and Curran there is a lot going on in this one. There is a magical flare brewing so we meet some interesting creatures and characters that only make an appearance during such times, including a crossbow wielding guy called Bran, who also seems to have a distinct interest in our Kate. She also picks up a new sidekick in the form of a street kid named Julie. I've come to the conclusion that Kate, no matter how tough and mouthy she can seem sometimes, really can't say no to someone asking for help. It's just not possible for her to walk away from someone who needs her and her trusty pet Saber.
The ending was great and climatic but obviously I cant say much about it. I am inhaling these books at breakneck speed and I am already concerned about the withdrawal symptoms I will face when I run out.
