Starts the story of London Transport from its earliest days, adding to a series which is building into the most comprehensive coverage of the capital's transport history. It features a selection of nostalgic and atmospheric period photographs and some personal anecdotes.

The misprints begin on page 6 where the Underground Group's TOT Mutual Aid Find is cited a the "TQT Mutual Aid Fund" and the B-Type bus "Ole Bill" is captioned as "B42" (it's actually B43).
Sadly pages 8 and 9 refer to independent bus operators a "Pirates", a pejorative term coined by the London General Omnibus Company to denigrate their competitors.
Page 14 carries a photo captioned "Lord Ashfield looks on indulgently at an award ceremony ..." when in fact the person pictured is Frank Pick.
Page 17 carries a photo taken in "A National garage in North East London c1923" according to the caption. It's actually Charles Wayman's former garage in Highbridge Street, Waltham Abbey, Essex.
The picture of Morden Station on page 26 has clearly been accidentally reversed, and why on the next page a photo of East Finchley station (built in the late 1930s) appears in mystifying.
Further into the book page 55 carries a photograph of what the caption claims in a B-Type bus in the Marylebone Road when the layout of the lower deck windows shows clearly that the bus is an S-Type.
I could draw attention to numerous other errors, but that would just be tedious.
Not one of Ian Allan's better efforts.
